Someone posted Japanese manhole lids in the post about Disney control points. I've noticed some fancy manhole lids around Florida, and I found some examples online.

Those are good ones. I once had a job where I had to locate all the Manholes in the City of Reno, 12,000 of them but they were all generic with Made in India on them. Good to see cities take pride in custom designing their covers in American foundries.

Probably a result of a "Buy America" or "Buy American" requirement tied to the funding source.
I don't think pride had anything to do with it.
As we all know, government contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder. If it was allowed, ALL of the iron products would come from developing third world countries.
There was a contractor from Phoenix who had a sewer job here in Kingman (180 miles away). He used City of Phoenix covers, which he later had to replace.
The coolest one I ever saw was about 30 ft in the air under a stream of water. Winter time in MI, the water gate valve broke. The lid blew straight up with a bang and then came down with another big bang. Luckily we were a good distance away and nobody or property got hurt.
