TSC3 took a blow to the head last week. Big gust of wind sent rover over. Slow motion fall and bounce off frozen ground with me making a desperate lunge and grab, 'Noooooooooo', like that was going to somehow stop it in mid air. Now it's doing strange things like translating points I tell it to rotate.
Anyone ever corrupted their controller software this way before? I think a reinstall may be in order. Glad they build these things to take some abuse because apparently I can dish it out. Oh well, stuff happens.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
Yup, same thing with a FC100. And yelling "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" don't do squat! Had to replace the unit, it was definetaly fubar!
I feel your pain!

I am surprised a "small" fall like that damaged it. Our TSC2 took several hits from instrument height with no problem. But, last year I was walking on a gate arm about 30' above the river, and it fell out of my life jacket where I had stuffed it, hit the metal beam I was on, smacked the concrete wall a few times on the way down, then the water. It took at least 30 minutes to get a boat, lock through, and fish it out. It had water in it, even though it is supposed to be waterproof. What happened was that the several drops over the years had caused hairline cracks in the case, nothing that rain would penetrate, but being submersed for 30 minutes did it.
It still turned on, but the buttons were "squishy", and the buttons did not do what they were supposed to do. I was able to get the data out of it, but it needed $900 of repairs (better than buying a new one with robot radio, $6K or $7K).
Same thing has happened with R8's-yes, they are waterproof (from the rain), but normal wear and tear will cause cracks to form and they are no longer submersible (not that you ever want to submerge one, but stuff happens). Also, R8's have vents in them that can let water in over time.
Still, a long way from the first Trimble 4000 unit I used in 1986-they had fins on the side to let the heat out.
John,
Controller and R8 seemed fine after the fall. Nothing really noticeable until the following day I had a simple conventional survey to do in a subdivision. Too many trees for GPS. Ran a traverse with four legs between a couple of found subdivision corners using a compass bearing to get going. After computing out the plat and checking measured vs. computed distances, went to rotate my trav points and ties onto the record computed bearing, something I've done a thousand times before but no matter what I tried, Survey Pro would have none of it and threw in a translation on top of a wonky rotation. I contacted Spectra and got a newer version of Survey Pro loaded this morning. Seems to be working properly now. Just don't know if the smack the DC took caused the software to become demented or maybe it was all just coincidence. Couldn't help but wonder briefly if it was just me that was losing it. I've had my fair share of blows to the head. o.O

Trimble is tough...
Dropped my TSC2 off of the top of this. (landed near the porta potty) Don't ask :-X
Worked just fine after that. A couple of years later the touch screen went out. Not sure if that had anything to do with the fall or not.
