I finally made the commitment to purchase a R10 and Trimble M3 after a lot of research. I've been a fan of Topcon and survey pro for years as well a field genius. It's actually been quite a few year since I've had my hands on some new age equipment.

Where should I start on learning the access software? How about the R10?
Majority of my use will be RTK w/base and rover with occasional static.

Seems like I read something about a R10 base recording static observations while simultaneously performing RTK? Is this possible?

That has been possible with most brands for a long time.

The Access software is incredibly easy to run. Measure Codes is amazing for topo.

However, it is the setup that can be a pain. Hopefully, your partner (aka dealer) will set it up for you. In you situation, I'd ask to sit with them when they do it. Let you watch/take notes, erase it all, then let you attempt to run through the setup with their guidance.

Good luck!

The first thing you should learn is how to set up a survey style and what the options are. Contrary to the above, it's not that complicated and not hard, but it's info you should know. For instance, to log static data on the base while performing RTK you want to go to Base Options and change the survey type from RTK to RTK & Logging, then set it to log to the receiver at the desired interval. I always set up my RTK survey style and then just copy it, make that change, and save the copy as RTK & Logging.

The second thing is learn what the tools are in the GNSS Functions screen and how to use them - that screen is your friend.

The third thing to learn is how to calibrate the tilt sensors and magnetometers on the R10, and how to use Tilt Auto Measure and measure an offset point. Those tools are awesome, especially Tilt Auto Measure. Also make sure XFill is enabled in your survey style and learn what that does.

Once you have the basics of setting it up and operating it down pat you can start learning the more advanced stuff.

If you have any questions or problems feel free to start a conversation with me, I can help you with just about anything with that system.

I should add that Trimble has incredible resources on their web site - General Survey Help is the Access manual and it's very comprehensive.

Thanks to all for your help. Equipment is set arrive tomorrow. How do I confirm I have the latest firmware and latest version of access. It's a used unit. Dealer says i do but I want to confirm day 1.
Also any tips on setting up a fcl or using the field definition manager? I've watched a good bit of videos on the access software and the R10 in general but no luck yet on finding videos for the access newbie. CAD program will be Carlson so I'm also doing a demo on it as we speak and want to get myself fluent with their field to finish coding ASAP.
Big thanks to Lee D for the advice offline.

In Access, if you hit the Trimble key on the keyboard or the Trimble symbol in the upper left-hand corner a menu comes up, if you go to About you'll see the Access version (current is 2016.02) and the software warranty expiration date. You update Access by connecting the TSC3 to the computer and running a program called Trimble Installation Manager that can be found on the Access support page in the Downloads area.

You can check the receiver firmware and warranty date through the Instrument menu in Access. R10 firmware can be downloaded from the R10 support page and there are a couple different ways to install it; I use Winflash because it's what I'm used to but that's the slow way. The current R10 version is 5.11.

For some reason Trimble has a version 5.14 as a .timg file and not in WinFlash. FWIW I have had issues with WinFlash and the R10s. I would recommend installing firmware updates through the R10 GUI with the timg file.

I hadn't seen 5.14, I downloaded 5.11 last week. I know they recommend using the timg file with the web GUI I'm just an old dog 😉

I'm still learning to get the base and rover setup. Seemed to have the styles figured out and understand what is what for the most part. Currently at a hurdle now when defining the base point. Observation class is showing autonomous so i can't enter assumed coordinates, changed class to local, error in regards to can read WGS 84 or something like that. Fiddled with some settings until I got it connecting and got an error that omnistar subscription was expired.
Went back to styles and changed that to SBAS. Went back to base setup and did a here position. Got everything up and running and took a couple of topo shots. Went to point manager to review points and the Northing and easting show up to be ? rather than numerical values. I've searched videos, Manuals, quick guides and I can't find any good info on setting up a coordinate system, observation class etc.
