There are numerous Chinese manufactures that make "inexpensive" instruments. My caution to you is that seldom can you find one that someone local sells or supports. In addition they might or might not connect to a third party data collector.
While they look good and are pretty cheap, they don't come without cost. If something goes wrong and you need support I hope you speak the language or at the very least can be without your gun while they ship you a replacement...after you send yours back of course.
I asked one manufacture who was at the ACSM conference in Spokane, WA a number of years back about their instruments. I commented on the quality VS a Sokkia, Topcon, Nikon, His comment was that they don't compete with those brands. They cannot build a high quality instrument and keep the prices low, that their prices reflect the quality of the materials and labor that go into making the instrument. Their market is the low end or construction market.
Good luck in your search

The price of used TS are falling and there are some very nice Topcon and Sokkia and Nikon listed on Ebay and at Hayes and GeoShack.

I see an advantage in something that can be supported and maintained by the people that carry those items.
