Ca. PLS5116 issued April 21, 1982
... Exam was on October 31, 1981.
I took the exam in Redding Calif. because I did not know if I would be living in Oregon or California when I signed up. I had moved and was living with Tom and Mary Peterson on Mill Station road. I drove up the day before and stayed in a Motel.
I charged all my spare batteries for my HP29c, and was ready for a grinder of math. turns out it was mostly boundary and I had to calc very little. It was like my toughest day ever at work, but it was all the stuff I did daily at work. I think I aced it, but all I know is that I passed it on my first try!

Congrats,

On both counts. Doing so well on your exam...and being able to remember it!

Mr. Cash:
I passed, I have no idea what the cutoff score was that year, but I "think" I did well.
I remembered because I wrote it down more than 20 years ago. 🙂

I too took mine in the fall and found out in spring that I had passed. As to the year, it was '82 or '83. My "original" license shingle was lost and a replacement issued in '99, so I can't look up on the wall. I'm sure it's written down somewhere...

As to my score...it doesn't matter as long as I passed. That was one exam I never really wanted to know the results!

in Ca. there is a cutoff score developed for each year, after the initial grading. if you pass you never know the score... if you fail you can appeal and learn the score in the process.
so, it could be that the cutoff was dumbed down significantly, and I could have just barely passed with a really low score. however I am confidant that I am Brilliant, and a good test taker. 🙂

Ca. is famous for having a low pass rate, my theory is that is a result of low admission requirements (very little experience).
I have been admitted to the exam several years before, just before I moved to Oregon, but I skipped the exam thinking I would just get my ticket in Oregon. Oregon said "no, you need 8 years of decision making experience" Ca. was only 6.

The year after I got my Ca. LS a friend was scrambling to prove experience in Ca. turns out he had taken and failed the Ca. exam several times but was just then being asked to show 1 year of Office experience... he had many years as a Union construction staker and had none... reverse engineer that: in 1981 they were not reviewing or verifying experience! (and the exam was mostly Boundary, that my friend had no exposure to.

OK, all that said, am I "proud" of my 1982 Ca. PLS? .... kinda, but not really that much.

I can relate. I was "proud" of my achievement at the time I obtained licensure. I had studied and worked a good long time for it. It was an accomplishment I worked toward and achieved.

In the "big" picture of my life, it was really a small flash in the pan. I mean if you live to be 80 years old, two years is only 0.025 of your whole life! Most of the accomplishments in my life came after I was licensed as a surveyor.

And in all honesty, most of the knowledge and (if I may call it) wisdom I possess concerning land surveying came AFTER my licensure. Surveyors are like a bottle of wine. Most of us are lousy when first made, and require a little aging and repose to develop our full robe, bouquet and palate.

I took and passed the LSIT in Fall 2001 and the LS in spring 2002. My license was issued July 26, 2002.

I burst all the buttons on my shirt, I thought I was going to change the world. The public would view me with the awe and respect accorded to a Brain Surgeon.

Into every life a little humility should come; mistakes will do that for you. People react differently, some think, hey I made a mistake, try not to do that again. Others think, I'm perfect so it couldn't be my mistake.

Now I'm trying to catch up on all the things I should know but don't, that is if I am making decisions about people's property rights.

Not too many numbers between us, for being a year apart.

Well, as the relative "newcomer" to this license discussion...

I got my LSIT in California in 1992. I was going to college at the time and everything was "fresh in my mind" so passing that multiple choice exam was fairly easy. But my career as a surveyor flipped around and got distracted for just a bit between 1994 (when I finished college) and 2000. But in 2000, I was definitely on track. Took the LS exam in 2003. I passed the national portion with "flying colors" (I have no idea of my score but I'll say that I aced it). The state specific portion I didn't quite pass. I believe I was within "appeal distance" to a passing score, but I had heard many stories about the appeals process and decided to give it a miss and retake it the following year. In 2004, I took the state specific portion (didn't have to retake what I had already passed), and waited for my results. Well apparently the Board had some internal issues because it seemed that about every other correspondence they sent me didn't get to me. And this time, my exam results didn't get to me. I called, they said that I passed the state portion, but they were missing my "take home" portion. I had assumed that I had passed it just fine back when I initially taken the exam... So anyway, I resubmitted the take home portion, dealt with a couple more "lost letter" issues, and finally, in June 2005, got my license (LS 8040) issued in CA.

Then, I was ready to start learning!
