A fellow LS calls me today (I used to work with 20 yrs ago) and he informs that he has a problem with a design topo that I did 3 years ago.

I ask - How so?

He tells me that the description of the BM that I state on my survey is ambiguous and not quite correct.

BM note states:
"BM #672" - "C&C Denver Brass Cap in concrete, Just north side of RR Bridge, 53.5 feet west of west flow line of Quebec St"

-- (as quoted from the City & County of Denver Tie Notes) --

Fellow LS tells me that the BM is NOT "just" north of the bridge and is in fact over 20 feet away and that I should have been more specific.

I tell him that my note reads exactly as the Denver Tie notes reads - and in fact - I was quoting the tie notes

He informs me that I should have been more specific, regardless.

I tell him that I'll take it under consideration.

He then tells me that he's seen this before on my drawings.

I ask him "is this really why you called me?"

He says yes, and it's a problem and that my note is insufficient.

I tell him that I'll take it under consideration (again) & hung up on him.
(before I really told him what I wanted to tell him)

that's crazy! Tell him to issue his own note and stop wasting your time. Clearly your note was NOTE a problem, as he found the benchmark, right?

I found the BM using that note, and clearly, you did too, what's the problem?

Cheers,

Radar

I know, right?
& it's only Tuesday already

No sweat of my back

Of all the real issues out there, this guy calls to bust my chops about a Bench Mark description

Now that I think about it
I'm surprised he didn't take issue with my assumed basis of bearings

I probably would have suggested that he try to get more bran in his diet.

Thought No 1.
It is sad that some people have to worry about such trivial things as the insignificant difference of "just North of" and "over 20 feet North of".

Thought No 2.
Just how far is it over 20 feet. I would expect someone with a complaint to have been able to get a more precise tie than that if they are going to call and offer what they feel is a better quote.

Thought No 3.
That reminds me, 20yrs ago I worked with an a.....e too.

😉

When did Kent move to Colorado? I didn't get the memo on that.

Maybe a requirement for registration should be taking a public relations
exam. Just thank the other surveyor and note that you will tighten up
on your ties.

In my business, I consider every competitor a possible reference.

Well, I frankly don't see why you should apologize for being unable to write very good benchmark descriptions and just copying someone else's work instead. I mean, it's not as if you've gone through the US Power Squadron training course, eh? No, next time someone calls wanting to get you to describe things better, just tell them that you don't think it's a very good idea to rewrite the record descriptions since it will only confuse everyone.

I'm not knocking you, but we show a bearing and distance tie to the benchmark from a corner in the survey along with a note. However, in podunk East Texas, we don't really go and dig up a BM unless it's requested by the specs for the job. Typically, we assume 100 and roll on and set 2 per 4 acres of site, run through them, and then note what they are and where they are.

We don't have BM's with notes furnished by cities around here. 🙂
