So, yesterday as I was doing some topo with a GPS unit my I-man slipped while shooting in a conc ditch structure and busted 2 out of the 6 prisms. The prism still looks completely fine from the other side.
Is this prism still ok to use as a back sight?
Set it up on a tripod and tribrach and shoot it at all rotated angles for a self diagnosis.
Just bite the bullet and buy another one. I hate working with broken stuff
I dropped my ATP1 prism before, the crack wasn't as bad as yours but the glue came loose. As the prism could jiggle about the readings jiggle too, so I had to buy a new prism

I expect you will find that it will yield accurate results. But my Topcon has trouble enough tracking a complete prism. It would not track a broken one better.

That's good advise.
You are now the proud owner of 6 potential long range permanent reference marks! If you ever have a site where you need longish range permanent reference points these can be permanently fixed to structures and will give much longer range than any stick-on target. I've had the equivalent stuck onto various structures/bridges on one site - they have now been there for over 10 years. I did remember to put a small hood over the top of them to avoid muck and bird xxxx collecting on the prism face. Being about 10 metres above ground they have never had any problem of sightlines being blocked or from vandalism.
Er..., how's your i-man?
He's fine. Just a small scratch and bruise.
