I recently spent a week with Kurt Luebke in the Black Hills doing nothing but searching for old monuments. It was our third joint trip to the area. One of the monuments on our "must see" list was Black Hills Forest Reserve monument No. 1. It is located north of Hot Springs, SD, not far from Wind Cave. It did require about a mile hike, but was a pretty cool find.
There were about 220 of these monuments originally set around the boundary of the forest in 1899. The survey was performed by the U. S. Geological Survey who did similar forest boundaries across the western United States.

Very cool!
Amazing how good it looks 114 years later......
Great pictures, but where's the forest? I had the same problem in AZ, no forest but plenty of Forest Reserves!
Back east, here, we have trees in our forests 🙂 I mean lots of trees, not a few!
Woods in the Black Woods
There are quite a few forests in the black hills. We climbed Harney's peak and it was quite wooded. Not the kind of woods you have to crawl through like around here though.
