My GeoMax didn't like the glare behind the prism. I had to wait for the sun to move a bit before the autolock started working again.
At least it didn't measure to the glaring object.
Just a question on the Geomax, do you need to use all Leica type tribrachs, prisms etc? If I replace a Topcon with one do I have to get all new accessories as well?

I'm far from an expert, but my impression is that everybody else copied Wild tribrachs so you can probably use the Topcons.
The prisms will work if you can figure out how to define the offsets, since Leica defines them differently from everybody else.
That looks like a good place to park the truck............
or mount one of those signs as a backdrop..........
Shortly after taking that photo I made a whole lot of people unhappy. One of the monuments I needed to tie was in the left turn lane of a busy suburban intersection. I decided that cones weren't enough, so I blocked the lane with my truck and distributed 6 cones. The monument was in a well, so I figured I wouldn't be there long, which was good because the left turn sensors weren't getting tripped and traffic started backing up right away.
Unfortunately, when I opened the well I was confronted by a lot of dirt, and I had to dig out about half a foot of it with a spoon to reveal the 3/4" pipe about 1.5 feet below grade. Since I was already pissing people off, I decided to do the next guy a favor and raise the position with a rebar and cap.
By the time I got the shot I'd been there about half an hour, and cars were backed up about 300 feet. I closed the lid -- leaving all the dirt on the pavement -- and got the heck out of Dodge.
When my robot gives me trouble with glare in the background I try to make myself as big as I can between the prism and the glare. I have a big goofy floppy hat to help.

That works pretty well when shooting a rover, but it wasn't much help with my fixed backsight, which was maybe 800 feet on the other side of the gun from where I was working.

Ten four good buddy.
I also felt your pain reading your lane closure story.
Ain't nuthin' easy.
Does the GeoMax have ATR settings for 'HIGHLY REFLECTIVE ENVIRONMENTS' that is found in the Leica versions of the instrument. If so, that works great for those situations.
