Don't know who set it or why. No connection to a property corner or line. Never seen one before-it's in rough country on private property just south of a BLM parcel and close to the section line (+-20').

there are stenciled letters on all four faces, they are not pointing correctly.

Sorry, I intended to say it isn't close to a property corner but may be trying to mark a property line which is an E-W section line.

I dunno...it looks vaguely familiar, but I can't quite wash the cobwebs out just yet (only on my second cup of coffee this morning).

I have seen quite a few County Road Stones that are very similar, and a few miscellaneous cadastral (property) corners set by both County and private surveyors that are somewhat similar (but without the fancy N/E/S/W characters).

I have seen a LOT of USGS/USC&GS monuments that are just like that (again without the fancy letters), BUT they are almost always marked USGS, or U.S., or something like that.

OLD Military (or OTHER) reservations also come to mind, so that might be something to look into. I seem to remember a Public Water Reserve out in Nevada (40 acres) that had Stone monuments around it (no idea who set them or when).

Not much help here, maybe later when my brain de-fogs a little more.

What are the other letters? Your statement leads me to believe they are N,W,&E. If so, are they correct in relation to each other? (Ie: is the N opposite the S, and the E and W correct in relation to the other letters?

Not that I know where I'm going with that, but it must have been quite a chore to stencil in that fancy of letter.

and to add to the confusion this is just a few tens of feet away. No idea who Lori is

the north face is looking NE and the other markings are on the "correct" sides for compass markings

How hard would it be to pick the thing up and move it?

Maybe someone has moved it from it's original position.

Looks like a nice tomb stone for a surveyor named Lori. 😉 I see a cross on it 😉

You would have to dig it out. Rocky ground, but anything's possible.

Possibly A Cemetery Monument, Because Of The Marks

And may have been relocated.

N,S,E,W may be on a plat North not neccessarily true North.

Check the bottom to see if it has been broken off.

I have seen them unmarked in marble and granite used as property corners. In some cases the monument corner is the property corner and a set of 4 can be completely inside the lot. Don't be surprised to find a pin cushion pin or pipe at a corner. If you are not going to shoot them twice carefully measure them so you can properly place the lot lines.

Dig Underneath That And Find A Favorite Dog

We have a cat monument in our yard.

And to tell the truth, we did not get a conditional use permit.

Looking southwest from the rock:

We have a 4 wheeler stuck in knee deep snow and I went up to "rescue" the party chief who got stuck. Go get it Saturday with a more robust outfit. He was trying to get the west 1/4 corner of the section that's in some rough country.

eewwwwww... a monument to a cat. Where is Ted when you need him?

Burying a cat requires no CUP - Conditioned Useless Permission. Just dig a hole, toss in Fuzzy, fill it in, and move on.

No, this line is an 1880 era line, hardly mentioned topo calls even though there is a 1200' drop along the section line. 16-top, 33-ravine, 76-top. Anyway this came much later I guessing.

Matt Clark PLS CFEDS and the Spudster back in 2007.

County Line Monument set in 1892 by:

A.J. Stookey, Tooele County Surveyor
N.P. Anderson, Box Elder County Surveyor

Kinda sorta similar.

P.S. I should send this photo to Spud's girl friend...NAW

Thanks Loyal. 1892!!!

I may have to revise how old I thought my monument is.

They do look similar, although that monument is quite a bit larger than the one in my pictures.

Mighty

I've got some photos (somewhere) of several "Road Stones" (also in Tooele County), that date back to the mid-1880s. They are also "squared" at the top, and obviously "engraved" professionally. They are about half the size of the one above (width-wise), but nearly as long (and high).

I vaguely remember seeing a STONE very similar to yours, somewhere East of Scofield Utah (or maybe it was Clear Creek). That was back in the mid-1970s, and I never figured out what it was (for). Really cool stone, and in the middle of NO-WHERE!
