I'm a 5th year Survey Tech hailing from Philadelphia, who is thinking about applying for a job in the Raleigh area.

Was wondering what the scene was like down there, work load wise. Is a 40 hour work week attainable or too much to ask for?

Thanks,

I'm not, but I thought one of the guys here on this page recently moved to Raleigh and was striking out. I don't want to discourage you, but maybe plan a trip and visit some firms before making a relocation decision.

I am a few hours from Raleigh and my understanding is the market is pretty soft there. I dont know of anyone hiring in Wilmington. I would try and setup interviews and find a job before moving. That has always been a good practice.

There IS a lot of work, here in Raleigh..... alas, there are more out of work Surveyors, Cad Techs, Crew Chiefs etc than there are positions. Check out INDEED.com, and ihire.com... as well as others, send your resumes, and come for visits/interviews...

I wish I could offer you hope, but myself, and several hundred other applicants are all fighting for every job.

Target is always hiring, as is Wal-Mart....the pay is little better than minimum wage... but it'll get you local. And being local, might give you an edge, over an "out-of-towner"

good luck
Frank

Don't get too discouraged by what you read here. There are still a few jobs out there mostly temporary but still.. It's work. We are also seeing many of the temp jobs turning into something longer term. It's not easy yet but it's in the upward trend, things are being built again at least.

When you get down talk to some of the vendors and repair centers. If they're good they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Check out some of the firms working the Oil and Gas/pipeline area. The ones in ND are screaming for help, last I checked.

I am from the Hickory Boone area and it's not too terrible here. We have a small operation, but have maintained work throughout. The Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill area is a vast growing area. I have heard there is plenty of work in this area due to Research Triangle Park. I think this would not be a bad move. Good Luck.

The Office or My Apartment

Once upon a time there was a fine establishment in the fair city of Raleigh named either "The Office" or "My Apartment". If someone inquired about how you spent your evenings, you could answer "At The Office" or "In My Apartment". Only bad boys and girls knew that this was a place where co-eds and locals were paid well to remove their clothing while dancing on a small stage. The weekly Amateur Night was very well attended. Surely the economy hasn't forced this business to close.

Thanks all round for the insight.

I'm might just inquire about the job and see where it goes from there.

Yes on calling around before you move there. I just moved there 3-4 weeks ago. I called before I even left the other place and now have a part time job.

Good luck on everything!

I don't know N.C. Is Raleigh close to Greenville? If so, this guy might be hiring.

LMFAO...that is a wild theodolite with a distomat?!?!? LOL, he should be hiring a new web developer to produce a better graphic, if he is actually using that setup then he is on surveying welfare.

North Carloina is dead as anywhere else, you better have a secure job before you pack your car because when you arrive your job may have already been eliminated.

I lived in Raleigh for about 5 years. It is an awesome area of the country. I can't speak to the current work load there now as it has been about 10 years since I was there. But you will not find a better quality of life, if you can land a job. All 4 seasons weather wise. Lots of fun stuff to do with 3 ACC schools in the Triangle. 3 hours to the mountains, 2 hours to the beach. I dig Raleigh!
