We broke the level bubble assembly on a prism pole. I note they are available in 20, 30, and 40 min vials. Any thoughts on which to buy?

Sam Clemons!! I'm not sure if you've been posting in a long time, but this is the first I've seen you in quite a while. Welcome (back If that's the case).

I would think it depends on your type of work and what precision you want. If i doubt, I would go with the more sensitive bubble so it can be applied as needed. I would assume that would be the lower number 20-minute vile.

I got tired of the board, missed the Religion and Politics sections, been busy with life, kids, grandkids, music, still surveying like mad. I will try to drop in every now and then.

I think the 20 minute vials are what is commonly used. A more coarse vial would be fine if the rod is to be used for nothing but topo or rough staking, perhaps.

There are also 8' bubbles out there. They will drive you crazy if you aren't braced a bit, but they are sensitive.

Good to see you are still kicking Sam! Hope you and family are well.

Last year we bought a bunch of Seco rods from Hayes for $79 dollars or something like that - They came with big 40 minute bubbles. One bubble got broke so I used the opportunity to inventory and bought a mix of 8 minute and 20 minute , some bubbles and some assemblies. The 20 minute units are great for the general staking the construction crews do. We keep the red 8 minute units for our cadastral and control work- they are a bit more tedious to set up, especially if you have a bipod with a sticky button.... if I recall correctly, there wasn't that much difference in the price of the Bubble vesus the whole assembly.

Good to see you posting a bit.

The 8- and 10-minute vials are the only ones I use. They make a notable difference in error ellipses.

Yep, you gotta go to facebook to get your Adrenalin rush now and just come here for the survey posts and camaraderie. A lot of people are so much more intelligent-sounding when you don't know their thoughts on politics or religion

Oh, but just imagine the fun we could have arguing about ....I can't mention that, but we can argue 40 vs 20. Looks like 20 it is. I still like to do a jigsaw puzzle occasionally. Nothing much has changed except we are expecting our 10th grandchild. Business has really been on the slow side compared to years past for the past 4-6 years but were really busy in the last half of last year. Just got back from another mess, the result of years of made up deeds, rough surveying, amateur surveying, etc. Should not be a problem to straighten out. The parcel I am surveying does not even show, at all, on the tax/gis records. It is a remainder parcel from all the other parcels sold off a large property. It also involves family, an insane, truly, as in committed family member and just a little bit of everything. Fence encroachments, pins placed by owners held as good for long times, painted lines not in the right location. Normal day in the life of a surveyor.

HI SAM!
Good to hear from you.
I need one of them all day bubbles, myself.
Just kidding, had to say hey!
Haven't heard from you since meeting a couple years ago at Troy's.
Take Care!

Seco bubbles are all about $20. You don't need to replace the assembly, just the vile. I just replaced the 40' that came with my new carbon fiber with an 8' in about 5 minutes including adjusting.

That sounds entirely too easy. You must have done something wrong.

I like the 8 min bubbles. I keep an 8 min bubble in the normal location on the pole and I put a 20 min bubble about 2ft up from the bottom for use when staking or shooting tall monuments.

It is not the bubble that is broken, it is fine, it is the bracket that is broken. If anyone knows where I can buy just that part it would be great. I have seen the whole assembly from 60-80 dollars.

We paid $42 for the entire assembly thru the "local" (120 miles south in Missoula) dealer.

How is the sensitivity specified? I can think of too many possibilities. When a 20 minute vial is 20 minutes off vertical, where is the bubble?
