Recently acquisition and am curious about what was in the holder at upper left of the box bottom.  I have seen one other with this for sale and both have sn's in 1942-1944.  Talking with knowledgeable person who suggested this was possibly mitary contract with additional spare parts and lubrication?

Any idea or period photos?

The bigger holes in that box in the upper corner you are asking about could be to hold extra screws that go into resessed holes in the Plane Table and hold the paper down. The smaller holes could hold sturdy pins that are stuck into the paper at the properly scaled position (think control point) where the Table is currently located.

Some pics!  There is about 0.75" between the board with the holes and the "cap" in the lid.  Holes do show signs of use, but no sign of use on "cap'
