Hello,

I am about 3 weeks or so into really using my new laptop that has Windows 8.1.The laptop itself is a Dell Inspiron 15 with 6GB RAM. It is not a huge, beefed up model, but it is light years ahead of what I was using. It is really working out for me so far.

I was really apprehensive about Windows 8, but it is growing on me. I have my Carlson 2008 with embedded AutoCAD installed, and it is running pretty darn good. Most of my other software is running really well also. I did have to upgrade my Nitro Pro, and it has some cool new features.

I am still having issues getting my HP Designjet 650C installed. I am also having a hard time with getting my drivers installed for my HASP USBkey for my Topcon Tools post processing software.

Other than those two issues, I am satisfied with the new laptop so far. I am being productive with it anyway. If I can get the plotter installed, and the Topcon Tools running, I will be in pretty good shape.

If anyone has any suggestions, they will be very much appreciated.

Have a good one,
Jimmy

I am all for change if the change is for the better. I positively hate Win8.x and have only one machine with it on it (a surface tablet). It sits unused 99% of the time while Win7 Pro machines run full time daily. I plan to acquire only Win7 Pro machines (until I can't anymore) and hope they get a big enough hit in the wallet to make them notice and return to a full working desktop with functional start menu and control panel dialogs that haven't been dumbed down.

Personally,

I still prefer MS DOS and my 8086 but then I'm old school.

Windows 8.1 is an excellent operating system in search of a workable user interface.

I have seen this discussion here about Windows8 a few times here in the recent past.
I was a XP Pro user for many years and then jumped to Windows7. It was pretty painless and I had minor problems adjusting to 7.

But I have from time to time been a math tutor to some home school kids and their household computer has used Vista and now Windows 8. I could not tolerate them at all. Simple procedures and accessories from XP Pro and 7 were a mystery to me.
I stopped using computers for assignments and went to calculator only problems.
But most of their state testing is done online and it seems to handle internet chores OK.

The concept behind Windowless 8.x was the idea that everything was heading to touch screen. Several years later the keyboard is still in use and very useful still. It was also the concept that laptops and desktops would be long gone.

Microsoft is a failing company that has lost touch with the end users much like politicians have and will slowly over the next decade wither away. New and better operating systems are out there and will be developed.

Personally I prefer Linux.
