I am just about ready to purchase a new laptop. I have been impressed with my daughter's Toshiba Satellite laptop.

I have the computer pretty much figured out. My question is whether to get Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit verses Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. The price difference between the two is about $100.

I am a solo operator, and use a pretty basic peer to peer home network. I am not sure that the differences between the two would be much difference for my small operation.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jimmy

I believe that you need the Pro if you want to do the virtual machine/Windows XP thing. So if you have any really old apps you want to be able to run you may need the Pro.

Upgrades are pretty easy with 7, or so I'm given to understand.

Pro and above support backup to network drives Home Premium does not. Take a minute and check out the table about half way down the page on this link for a good listing of features included in each version.

Thanks guys. It looks like the pro version would give me a little more flexibility.

Jimmy:

When I had my Windows 7 computer put together about 3 years ago, they put Home Premium in it. I did the Windows Upgrade (built into the program)to go to Professional Version last fall, all I had to do was click on the link and Microsoft did the rest. No glitches or hang ups. Cost $96± to do this directly through Microsoft. I don't know what the initial cost of the Home Premium was when the shop built the computer, but I think you can purchase the pro version from Tiger Direct for about $130±.

If you're tech savy enough, you can probably find a Win 7 Pro update on a DVD online for $75, and then do a fresh install. Around $100 for the Ultimate version.

If I were buying new and revamping, I would go to windows 8 and deal with the pain now. I think windows 7 is on the verge.

Windows 9 will be released next spring. It sounds like it is going to look and feel more like Windows 7 than 8. The upgrade cost from 8 has not been announced, but some believe it will be free to Windows 8 owners. Certainly it will be low cost.
