Thinking about a new computer.
My Carlson is running nicely on my old Dell laptop with windows xp pro.
Do any of you have experience with windows 7 or 8 running in "xp mode"?
Tia,
JB
Critical piece of info is what version of Carlson you are running and is it Intellicad, Embedded AutoCAD, or piggybacked on a free standing copy of AutoCAD?
I have Win8 now which was a jump from XP pro.
Things are WAY different if you have never seen a win7/8 box.
As a programmer, I made the choice to tough it out because one day MS is not going to deal with previous stuff.
The only "weirdness" I have is with MagicJack. But it does still work even if a little finicky (sp?).
Thanks, hope this helps...Carlson has said that my version won't run under win 7 or 8 without them emulating win xp.
First, give Jennifer at That CAD Girl a call and get Carlson updated to the latest version. I forgot what CES stands for, I started with 99 or XML. Do you still have to deal with Quick Keys?
I remember still having to recover drawings with the 2004 version. It doesn't happen daily anymore.
I recommend Windows 7. If you can get a solid state drive for the boot drive, I highly recommend it. No waiting. I hardly ever have a program crash with Win 7 and Carlson 2011...(can't remember the last time I did).
I know for me I used XP from 2002 to 2011...that's a long time in computer world.
I have tried Windows 8....I feel the core is still win7, but now they have added a flashy gui like it was a smartphone / tablet. They want you to swype and do everything with big blocky icons and no menus. I swear right-click does nothing now. No x's to close a window. It makes a computer harder to use.
Leave the gadget crap to Apple and their 12 to 20 something gotta have it now demographic. I need a keyboard and still use my machine as a CAD workstation business machine.
Running ACAD Map 2006 in Win 7.
It was flukey until I made a few modifications.
Yes, run it in XP mode.
Install service pack(s).
Dumb down Win 7, take out the animations and pretty fonts. I'm not sure how much to dumb it down, but I went to the performance page and unchecked most of the boxes.
Now it runs well enough.
You can still get the parts for a kick-ass XP machine, but you will need a computer geek or some know how.
Personally, I always stay behind the curve just a little bit. I upgraded to 7 once it was out for a while, I still have the rest of the office on XP with plans to move up to 7 in the foreseeable future.
There are some other issues you have to overcome with 7 and probably with 8. I have to login as an administrator and I had to change some specific settings to be able to access important system files (namely Temporary Internet Files), but I am used to having to modify the defaults to work in the way I want it to.
Good luck.
I have built myself a new XP Pro and am now tuning it to the new hardware before loading most of the programs. Every time I add something it resets something else.
NOT planning to upgrade anytime soon.
B-)
I have been mirgrating from xp to win 7 64 bit over the last 3 months and have hated every minute of it, i am mirgrating 3 computers, and about 6 times over budget, the hardware is easy and straight forward, the software a nightmare.
Nearly all the dedicated purpose written software i have been using on xp wont run in any sort of mode on win 7, i have loaded and tried xp mode , it works just like it says it will, but they also say its not very good for graphic intensive programs, and boy are they right. I tried to run arcview 3.2 in xp mode, it loads, but the redraws are like working on an old 286 sx pc, about 2 minutes to re draw 50 0000 polygons, it used to take less than 10 seconds on xp.
Mr sid , for viewing sid aerial photos, from lizardtech also does not work in 64 bit mode and there is no replacment for it, so my old gis system using mr sid and arcview are dead, also the full version of adobe acrobat version 6, that can create pdfs wont work , my 7 year old hp 1010 laser printer wont work, there is no driver available ...wtf, it is only 7 years old, there must be thousands of people that still use those bullet proof laser printers, surely microsoft could have written a driver for it ? I know i can easily go and buy a new printer to replace it, but why should i have to trash a perfectly functional printer onto the landfill site ?
I had several purpose written survey software programs done in delphi ,that no longer work, the authors are busy re writing the code to work on 64 bit machines, but due to all the work required to do it, i will have to buy the new version of the software again.
So my software expense has been considerable and was unbudgetted, keep an xp machine working so you can be productive during the upgrade, as far as i can tell the difference in performance from 32 bit to 64 bit is negligble , all the ram and processing seems to used for things that i have no use on a office pc, like media players, streaming and gaming, i have better devices for those things.
Although i am 80 % down the road on this upgrade, i am still thinking of pulling the plug on 2 of the computers and going back to xp, just leave the one on win 7.
I am glad i did not opt to upgrade straight to windows 8, that upgrade looks even harder.
I changed to 7 PRO 64 bit on laptop and 7 32 bit PRO on PC.
Both go extremely well.
Previously XP Pro.
Ashtech Solutions 2.6 runs in 64 bit mode but haven't found a way to download from Locus. (still use older laptop to do that which is rare these days).
Pathfinder Office (not sure which but an early version) runs OK in 32 bit mode on Win 7.
I really enjoy the Win 7 PRO and it (for me) is an extremely stable platform.
Don't have any issues with most programs.
That said, most of my programs I use for work are up to date.
Still use Office 2007 (full suite) on both with no problems.
Running Carlson2013 W/ intellicad on win7 64 bit with no issues. Also, using VMware player for several of our older stuff. Have had good results with the xp professional kernel, but have not been able to get the dos kernel to run.
Hi Lee,
we switched to Win7 some months ago, after a long time of testing and figuring out how we could run TGO and our Delphi programs ... everything is working now. The Delphi programs do run a little slower than before on XP, but they're not rewritten for x64.
We have one GIS-program that won't generate reports under Win7. Guess what ... the report engine is a Microsoft product ... it's the only thing not working.
As for you HP printer ... as I remember well I read about it before and one solution was to install the Win7 drivers (32/64) for the HP1020.
hope this helps,
Happy Hollidays from Belgium,
Christof.
A year ago I was able to get all my programs to run in Windows 7 XP Mode, but disliked it so much I went back to my old XP laptop.
Just got a new Windows 8 laptop. They dropped the XP mode, but I am in the middle of setting up XP in Hyper-V, as virtual machine. Been simple so far, just need to dig around here and find my old XP install disk. Hoping it will be better than on Windows 7. As others have said "may be time to upgrade". I will be upgrading my Carlson 2008, but wanted to try this first for fun. Not recommended for those that are not computer geeky enough to think of it as "fun". Oh, you have to upgrade the Windows 8 that comes on most computers to Windows 8 Pro to get Hyper.
PS. You can upgrade an XP or 7 to 8 Pro for $40 right now, but upgrade 8 to 8 Pro is $70 ?????
Will post here when it works.
TV's are the same way - Blu Ray and HDMI connections make anything
3+ years old trash. It is how they get you to keep buying new stuff.
If it ain't broke...
Thanks, i will mess around more with the delphi programs and try the drivers for the printer. Do you know of a work around for mr sid viewer ? Or arcview 3.2 ? I dont use it enough to warrant buying the new version, but have a lot of data on it that i refer to quite often.
Cheers
> Do you know of a work around for mr sid viewer ?
My suggestion would be to instal IRFanView. It runs fine on Win7 64-bit and the add-ons support viewing SID files with a lot more ease and flexibility that MrSid.

Lee,
can't help you with the GIS stuff, we have also IrfanView installed, but I have no need for it, I know others use it at the office.
As for the Delphi programs, I can run them with the properties for the exe set as in the inmage below

running in Win XP (service pack 2) mode and as Admin, works for me (I have no third party components in my programs)
