Got word that Microsoft is not going to support my trusty Windows 7 anymore. I guess the news has been out for a while, but it finally sunk in on me. I'm sort of hard headed. I want to thank everyone in advance for help with the following questions:

Do I really need to upgrade to Windows 10? OK, so Win 7 won't be supported anymore, so is that a big deal? I aim to keep my antivirus current and running, so maybe I can stave off the critters for a while.

I have Carlson Survey 2012 running on 2012 AutoCAD Map 3D. Will they still run on Win 10??ÿ

If my Carlson Survey 2012/AutoCAD 2012 will not run on Win 10, and I have to get Carlson Survey 2019/2020 standalone, can I insert image files from FEMA flood maps using a world file? They are PNG files with an associated world file. That's BIG for me since there are flood zones all over Savannah.?ÿ

Anybody have any trouble connecting the Carlson Surveyor 2 data collector to Win 10?

If I do have to bite the bullet and upgrade to WIN 10, which version is the best to get? I'm a one man shop, and don't have a network.

Again, Thanks for the help.

I'm a steam-powered guy in a microchip world.

?ÿ

As a follow-up, I plan to ask Carlson about the compatibility and the image questions. Their tech support is superb, but I just wanted some advice from outside the box, so to speak.

Thanks,

You will need to upgrade to the new Carlson with Windows 10.

Yes, you can insert images with a world file. Probably the same command and process.

You will need to install windows mobile device center and apply a patch to your computer (the patch is a free download) to get Windows 10 to talk to your DC. It works well when you get the patch file installed.

You also have a little time before Windows 7 stops being supported, but you are right to look into these problems now.

Good luck

Should be ok, so long as you have the original license key or serial # or whatever. I ran into this same thing a couple months ago when lightning hit our transformer and fried the old laptop screen.

?ÿ

called the Carlson guy after I couldnƒ??t get the disc to install, he said download the install off carlsonƒ??s website. That one has the patch and did, indeed, install seamlessly and has been running fine.?ÿ

One caveat, upgrading to Carlson 2019 or 2020 is going to show you some new toolbars, ribbons and some commands you have not seen before.?ÿ Importing images is still possible, and not difficult, but there are a couple of different ways in the newer releases.?ÿ As mentioned above, you want to make sure you have your serial numbers, they are under the help drop down, and then under the about key.?ÿ We have one computer with 2020, and they even changed the symbols on the toolbars in a couple of places.?ÿ No major troubles, just irritating.

I am going to get a new computer that has Windows 10 installed and unplug my Windows 7 Pro from the internet and continue to do business as usual with my Windows XP Pro computers busy with Carlson for drawings and COGO and the many versions of County Maps they house and Windows 7 Pro taking care of WordPerfect and being in control of various backup exterior drives and having a Windows 10 to have access to the internet.?ÿ

What is on sale at EBay....................

I use Carlson 2015 and it transferred to Win 10 fine, albeit the settings seemed to revert to a default state. I also have a Mini2 which does not connect with Win 10 unless one uses a patch as previously mentioned. Another alternative is going on Junipers website and installing their own program for the Mini/Surveyor2. You can use it for a 10 day trial and if you want the permanent install it will set you back 20 bucks.

Haven't done the above mentioned as numerous other programs I like and use failed to make the transition and I just temporarily bailed on it and am still using 7 until the clock runs out. I, like some others here, am a bit of a Luddite and reluctantly drag my heels on 'progress'.

BTW I read somewhere that TurboTax will not accept returns for the current year from clients using Win 7, but that may not apply to you

Again, Thanks to all.

I was looking at the AutoCAD forums, and it appears that 2012 AutoCAD does not play well with Win 10. Some people said they got it to work, but had problems, and had to do some sort of patch/dual boot thing. According to the forum, Version 15 is the first release that would work with Win 10. It is probable that I will upgrade to the Carlson 2019/2020 standalone version. I'll just have to get used to all the new bells and whistles. I will look into the options mentioned above regarding the data collector connection issue.

Thanks again

Personally, I am not a fan of Win 10.

One of my desktop machines (win 7) was force fed 10. Messed the computer up. HATED the interface. HATED force fed updates, like it or not. Each and every update would mess something up on the machine. Said "screw it", put the machine back to win 7. Much happier with it again.

Finally given win 10 at work. Still HATE the interface, had to find a free third party program to give me the look and feel of the old style Windows. Had to find a free third party program to modify the new Outlook 365. Not a fan of the new office either. Older versions are easier to use. Don't have to dig so far down through many menus to get stuff done.

All versions of 10 have forced updates except for the very tippy top business version. I have no idea how much that costs at this point, or if it is even available to us, the non-business consumer.

@dale-yawn

I feel your pain.  The first telephone I used was a crank-style phone mainly consisting of a big wooden box attached to our kitchen wall with two big dry cell batteries inside.  My first experience with a computer involved punchcards and a computer that filled the equivalent of three classrooms, was on a raised false-floor and required a dedicated climate control system.  My new iPhone has more capability by far.

But, the 200 learning curves over the past 60 years has been extremely stressful.

I thought Windows 10 would be a mess, but overall it has not been an issue for us.

We have and run newer programs Like Civil 3D but we also have a machine with Land Desktop 2007 on it and it works just fine.?ÿ

There were little items that were different again overall I was surprised that i could just keep working. We have had no issues with printers or anything like that.?ÿ
