You might remember my previous poll at https://surveyorconnect.com/threads/windows-10-poll.324276/

I'd like to do a follow-up now to see how things are coming along. In the previous poll, I was surprised at how many people actually had upgraded and furthermore, how many had very few problems after the upgrade.

So if you don't mind, please let me know how things are going now that another couple of months have passed. I realize that I may not have covered every scenario, but please choose the response that is closest to your experience.

Thanks! 🙂

My vote is cast with the caveat that Win10 is on only one of my machines. My other machines have not pushed the update (at least one of them being too old).

I have two laptops that I use. One was compatible with the upgrade, and one was not. The windows 10 has a few bugs, but for the most part, works okay.

No longer use any survey specific software. Had copies of educational CAD (AutoCAD, Civil3D and MicroStation) running on Win7Pro. Autodesk launched and reminded that license had expired, MicorStation opens files and appears to be functional. Have not tried to do much else with MicroStation.

Microsoft Office 2000 Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) was disabled. WordPerfect X5 Office Suite works well as does Open Office 4.1.2 and other applications. Still able to access all the Microsoft documents, spreadsheet formulas may need corrected.

Works with everything I run. Carlson Survey ICAD and C3D. Much more thoroughly tested pre-release in my opinion. What a difference that makes.

My only dislike is the dumbed down version of IE that comes with it. Many municipalities have sites that don't play well with non-IE browsers 'round here. Had to get IE back to default.

I have WIN10 on two laptops, both about year old hardware. Initially both had WIN7 Pro and the update was pushed out and upgrade performed automatically to WIN10. Due to a few apps that Lenovo pre-installed on my laptop NOT being needed or being replaced altogether by built in utilities within WIN10 I decided over the holidays, to get brave and do a clean install of WIN10 on the laptop I use everyday, pretty much no issues now, I have a few things I haven't figured out quite yet, BUT this is for apps that I rarely use and haven't needed them yet, some of the NGS utilities, CorpsCon, etc.

I am pretty sure I also have one old Windows app that will NOT work on any version after XP, I had it running on a virtual XP machine on WIN7 Pro, BUT that isn't going to be quite as easy to setup in WIN10 since that isn't specifically supported any longer. When WIN10 did the auto upgrade last fall, my WIN XP virtual box no longer worked. Having said that, Windows 10 Pro, Education and Enterprise editions come with a built-in hypervisor client Hyper-V allowing users to create and run other operating systems on a virtual machine. Although Hyper-V is mainly designed to run Windows guests it can also be used to virtually install other operating systems like various Linux versions.

When I get some spare time I will attempt to set up a virtual XP box on my WIN10 box.

I'm delaying because I'm concerned about breaking mission-critical applications. Someone said they had to reinstall TBC after moving to Win10. Has anyone else had that problem? How about Star*Net v6?

I know I'll make the change sometime in the next few months, I'm just cringing at the thought of having to clean up any messes that result.

I have a homemade desktop PC and a Lenovo E525 laptop; both Win 7 64 pro, AMD processors, 16 Gb & 8 Gb RAM respectively, identical software on both: MS Office 2003, Carlson Civil Suite 2012 in ACAD 2006, GlobalMapper 13, Opera Browser 9.8, and some other miscellaneous software.

When the upgrade nags started I decided to upgrade the laptop first, see how it went, and then upgrade the desktop if all went smoothly. Ha. MS said the laptop was compatible, so I pulled the trigger. Would not install. Went to Lenovo's website, checked for E525 Win 10 compatibility. 7,852 PCs & Laptops on their list of compatible devices -but no E525, and no explanation regarding its incompatibility. Tried again anyway, no joy. Called MS, got Joe, (his parents did NOT name him that, and there were likely no Joes within 500 km of his birthplace) let him take over the machine and perform the install. Wouldn't take. Joe passed me up the chain. Next guy gave it a try, nopey-nopey. Yet a third MS tech got on the phone (most everybody likes a challenge), and after 6 hours and 5 attempts, I surrendered and gave up on it. Seems there was an unspecified hardware conflict, but I could never determine just what it was.

Wednesday, 4 months after that waste of time, the nag popped up again on the laptop and, just for $hits & grins, I let 'er rip. Lo & behold, I now had a Win 10 laptop. Must be MS identified & corrected the conflict. I spent most of an afternoon tweaking the interface, privacy settings, etc. All in all, no more hassle than going from XP to 7. Everything works, so far. Kewl!

Now for the desktop. Before initiating the upgrade, I cloned the C: drive onto a spare SSD, just in case. Pretty much the same experience, except the on-board Radeon graphics on the Gigabyte mobo is not supported in Win 10, and some applications show up a bit fuzzy. Been meaning to buy a discrete graphics card anyway, so hopefully that will resolve the display problem.

The biggest issue is my wireless network. I can always ping A from B, & B from A, but connections are intermittent, sometimes I can see the other device in Explorer, sometimes not. I'll figure it out eventually, but it's not worrisome enough to make me revert to 7. I really don't understand why making a wireless network actually work dependably is so friggin' complicated, but then again, I know nothing.....

First impression: meh. Glad I didn't have to pay for it. Wouldn't like it much at all if not for Classic Shell. Best free software EVER!

FWIW,

SS

"Results are only viewable after voting."
can that be changed? none of the options are remotely close enough for me to vote.
... and can the results of your last poll be published?

Interesting that the vote is split 50/50.
Switched on one machine here.
I did like 7 better for the obvious reasons.

I'm still running XP on my tablet (works fine, no reason to upgrade it) and win7 on the family and work machines.

Not making the move to 10 until there is no other choice and it would not take on one machine.

The MSI P6N motherboard was designed exclusively for XP, at 3.4ghz it is super fast and great at crunching mass data and converting it.

I have a Win7 64 pro that is now getting placed into service since it fits the TurboTax minimum requirements.

I purchased the laptop specifically to upgrade. Then I installed some software and actually use the laptop when I am at home because I am too restless to stop working.

Someday I will catch up and upgrade.
