Anyone here have experience with both? Generally I get pretty quick with a keyboard. The touch screens have always added a second or two too coding my shots.
Just demo'd a 7" toughpad and liked the feel was wondering if anyone out there has made this jump and could comment?
Also, I am wondering how the pole feels/works in the rough stuff with the Toughbook mounted on it?
Thanks,
Steve
I hired a field guy that has used Toughpads at a previous employer. He absolutely swears by it. We have mostly TSC3s with Access, and a few Surveyors with SurvCE. We've had been phasing out Carlson in the field in favor of Trimble, but if Carlson's Survey GNSS is about fully baked I may abandon this idea and switch to toughpad's with SurvPC as it would save substantial $ if efficient. From what I understand the Toughpads are pretty high quality.
Steve - we have a toughpad here that we use with a Topcon PS and the more it is used the more everyone likes it.
We also had a topcon collector go in for service so we used the Toughpad in its place and it seems as though it just makes the process of connecting and getting a fix quicker.
I was using it yesterday and it shut off while a homeowner was talking to me.
i thought I would have to re-start the connections but it just came back up, connected and i checked into a point to be sure and kept going.
It was also 5 degrees and I had no problem with the unit.
I will tell you that the nice thing also is that ours is running Windows 7 and its very easy to email the guys, review PDF's, open WORD or any other thing you would do on a computer. It is also very fast when dealing with large files and even most exports seem to happen so quickly you don't believe the file was actually sent.
Ours has been dropped twice and while there are some scuffs and scrapes, it just keeps chugging along.
I too usually prefer a keypad but I will tell you (at least in Topcon Magnet) the keyboard comes up quickly and once you start typing I find it to be very quick.
Cant speak about the Carlson product as I have never used it before.
By the way, there are not many options for the brackets or clamps for the Toughpad but Lee Green on this site has developed a 3D printed case which you can purchase. We did and it works just fine after some minor tweaks.
Good luck whichever direction you choose!

You should get in touch with Lee Green. He uses them, likes them a lot, and has designed and printed a very cool pole mounted case for the 7" units. Wish I had one, lol.
I am interested in trying data collection with a tablet.
Does anyone know the proper way to move Magnet software from FC-500 to Windows 10 tablet?

That's another one for Lee. He'd know.

The pole is well balanced with the Toughpad with my robot setup (Topcon), can be a bit heavy with a GR-5 GPS, better with a Hiper V. I use a carbon fiber rod and bi-pod.
I started off using my Toughpad with the very flimsy Ram Mount X-Grip II. That holder was not secure at all. The ToughPad feel out when I stepped over a silt fence, and hit concrete. Screen had a 1/2" black line through it, not cracks or external damage. Sent it to Panasonic and the repair it in just one day, and overnight-ed back to me. This prompted me to look for a better mount, which I could not find. I created made a 3d model for a rugged case with Microstation and had it 3D printed by www.shapeways.com. They are available here https://www.shapeways.com/shops/leegreen

There is no upgrade path for Magnet from an FC-500 to a PC. If you got to magnet-enterprise.com you can lease the software at 1 year increments with monthly installments. I think the price is between $350 and $750 per pear depending on the configuration. This makes it easier to move Magnet software to different devices. Also your you can get a 30 day full working demo from dealer.
By the way, in March there is new Topcon branded hand-held field computer using Windows 10, called the http://gpsworld.com/topcon-introduces-new-data-controller-for-surveying/&apos ;">Topcon FC-5000.
Features
7 inch sunlight readable display
Intelå¨ Atom㢠Z3745 Processor
Full feature usage in either portrait to landscape orientations
Rugged MIL-STD 810G standard and IP68 certified
Windows 10 Professional, embedded
Front and Rear facing digital cameras
From the photo's I've seen, they are still using the crappy Ram Mount X-Grip II system. I don't know how much RAM it has, or how well the Atom processor works, compared the ToughPad.

We demonstrated the FC5000 at WOC2016 and the response was fantastic. The performance was super solid- even when streaming live video from the DS200i- taking reflectorless shots using the image snap function. The NEW RAM mount is not the one mentioned by Lee- it is a solid spring loaded mount that would not give way even when shook the pole vigorously. The BT functional distance has increase dramatically. The new FC5000 for Topcon and the SHC5000 for Sokkia are outstanding, field ready data collection platforms. If you have any further questions drop me a pm. pat
Pat,
It feel's like you are the official moderator from Topcon. Very fortunate to have Topcon fly you out to Vegas for a week in the middle of winter for the 2016 Concrete Expo.
Tell us what else was introduced at that show? I don't want to step on any toes, or upset the applecart, to have emails and phone calls flying around.
Therefore I must reserve myself.

We introduced a couple of new mass data products, new data collectors obviously, a new line of entry level total stations. WOC2016 really isn't a survey-centric forum-
