I keep getting a "free" update request from windows. I went back and re-read the windows plotter driver thread and I am concerned.

I run Carlson 2014 with embedded ACAD. I use a HP 500 plotter. I read about the difficulties with plotting but I am even more concerned with downloading my data collectors. I use three different collectors depending on what I'm doing. The Leica tcr1105 downloads through a PC card, the TS06 uses an Allegro running SURVCE, and then there is the Leica controller for the Leica GPS.

Does anyone know of what problems I may encounter? I am still using Windows 7 which came with the computer.

I do not have any problems, now, and I'm not looking to create any!

thanks,
Dtp

You have a couple of options (as well as trusting in MS and diving in).

1) Accept the upgrade to Win10 and your existing installation should be mothballed for you to return to(within a week I think). Just need hard drive storage space for it. You have then got your free upgrade before it expires. Your machine will be registered with them and you can use it whenever you want to in the future.

2) Do a parallel install of Win10 but this requires a bit of messing about to get the free upgrade. They don't really want you to do this but it IS possible with just a few extra steps..

If you are using Win7/8 and want it to stop nagging you (and maybe forcing an update when you are not looking) you can use GWX control panel to remove the Win10 helpful assistant.

Your Hp500 is functionally identical to my HP 800 (the 800 is a fully loaded 500) so I suspect that you'd see the same issues as me. However, I think the embeded AutoCAD engine is usually a version or so behind the latest AutoCAD release so you may not run into the issue of AutoCAD refusing to print to the Hp500 like I have with AutoCAD2016.

This is a tough problem; do you have another machine you can test with?

It sounds like you have 4 separate, potential problems; it might be best to struggle with them, first hand, while still maintaining a usable system. At least, that's what has worked for me, in the past.

Out with the old; in with the new; one step at a time....

I've got a similar problem.
No functional computer.
Totally out.
Both in shop.
One getting win 7 pro. The other getting win xp back in it.
I hope to abandon the xp very soon. And, get a win7 laptop. I-7. Good graphics.
External hd.

Thanks for your input. How to I find the GWX control panel to remove that ever so helpful update reminder? I'm going to stick with the Win7 Pro I am running since everything is working fine 🙂

must download it from the internet. I have it on all my computers (bar one which is running windows 10 in parallel (dual boot).

Curiously enough, the Designjet 500 is the one printer in my arsenal that worked after the upgrade. The rest of the upgrade experience has been regrettable. It seems that Edge and Chrome are doing battle inside my box. Lately it is with the pdf viewer and getting a print from it like it used to.
Hum, I am refereeing the Microsoft hockey league in a few weeks. I will put them all in the penalty box for misconduct.

Have it on good suspicion that W 10 is the last, and that future users will have to pay annually for a "license".

I'd stick to 7, but that time will come too when MS obsoletes it.

It's nice to have more money, eh?

Me too. I'm sticking with Win 7. Free upgrade my bass. You're not getting it for free. When did Microsoft ever give away free upgrades? In exchange for the "free" upgrade, you agree to let Microsoft collect data from your computer. They also say that they share your data with their "trusted" partners, whoever that is. And it's not very clear what they're collecting. Even if you disable some of those features, it still sends data to MS. They are being very sneaky and forceful about this "free" upgrade, probably for a reason that you might not like.

A good friend of mine is a lawyer and used to work for Skadden in NYC. They are a huge corporate law firm. He told me that one of the things he has done was to write and proof read those legal agreements that you must agree too by clicking in a box before installing software. 95% of the users just click in the box without reading them. He said it would be very wise to take the time and read the agreements. You might not like and most likely wouldn't agree to their terms normally...

Linux is looking better and better. I think Win 7 may be my last MS Operating System...
