Note to Wendell---- maybe this category should be Computers/cad/gis/scanning....

anyway-
my desktop is from 2005, and after last night's electrical storm is having trouble figuring out that it's "on" button is being pushed... this problem has occured in the past and is re-occurring more frequently, and my laptop is a (low-end)toshiba from 2008. So I'm looking to up grade.

so what's best? I'm leaning toward a laptop with a docking station so I can have keyboard and daul monitors at home then portability when traveling. or is it better to go with some other combo/ configuation?

edit.... I should add that my laptop has been co-opt'd by Youngest file.......

I say co-opt'd- she would most likely just say it's hers....:-P

Lenovo Thinkpad is very reliable hardware. Windows 7 64x is 'da bomb. Load up on Ram and HD space. Docking stations are really nice, almost as nice as dual 23" monitors.

Whatever you get will be obsolete in about 6 months. A lot of the older software will not run on 64bit and avoid Vista if you can. JMHO

I went to Windows 7/64-bit from Vista anticipating problems running software and haven't seen any yet. Ive loaded some pretty old stuff. Although, I did decide to pay to upgrade some software out of choice. It's easy to spend a few hundred more on accessories when you're shopping for a computer.

Notebooks are pretty cheap these days. I went with an "expensive" HP EliteBook at $1,400 (still way cheaper than the last one I bought). Lenovo's are good values. We have a couple of them in the family.

Dell Precision Laptop with docking station setup, Windows 7 Ultimate and all of the RAM you can handle. Remember, you get what you pay for.

If you are going to tote your 'puter into the wild outdoors, consider a rugged one such as the Panasonic Toughbook. Dell also makes a rugged laptop too called the Latitude XT2 XFR. Maybe a little more expensive but better option if you are going to be in the field with your 'puter.

Ditto that! Glad I stopped "upgrading" my Acad. Super Fast!

Haven't had problems with other software either. Old stuff seems to work just fine. Just faster.
