I set up on a random point, within sight of most of a pond site I'm doing topo on. It dawns on me that I can do resection from two known points that have been previously occupied. So I set up a prism on both; shot one, the realized I didn't have the point number in the job file (or the control file)for the other, so bailed out of the resection screen "enter second point".

Then I had the brilliant idea that I could just shoot it as a side shot, call it some unused point number, and deal with it later. So, now is later, and I find nothing in the SurvCE manual on what kind of records would be made if the resection had been successful. What does it do...just record the coordinates of the OP?

What's my best recourse now (when I find the point number) to turn the side shot into something, that when combined with my other backsight, gives me the location of my OP?

You can always translate and rotate the points from that setup. You don't have a third point for a check so its a bit of a roll of the dice. You'll have to compare the dH and dV and determine if it fits your error budget.

Me. "What's the difference?"
T.C. Carroll "It's the difference between right and wrong!"

From the info in your raw data you can use your known points as control and translate, rotate and solve the problem.

😉

Good morning,

Before you store your point, you will see the residuals for N,E,Z. Also, the coordinates for the new point will be visible. If all looks good, store it!

While still setup, I then enter "Store Points", accepting the OC and BS pts as they are, and then shoot the resection points just as a check.

In your .rw5 you will see the same information that you " ok'd" in the resection routine.

Thanks all.
I was wondering if doing the resection in SurvCE alone would leave any record. It appears it doesn't. Your suggestion assures it will.
