I have an Apple I-Phone 4. I use it with a prepaid plan. My eyes are not so good, and I'd really like to get a bigger screen. I liked the Samsung Note. (because it was big and clear) Now, Apple has a bigger screen one as well. Should I stick with Apple?

I don't use much of the fancy things it does. Pretty much illiterate, you could say!

The Samsung note has a plug in memory stick. I like that. It has a user replaceable battery. I like that. You can use the memory stick to transfer pics. I like that. I want to download a USGS app, and an aerial photo app, to help me find my way around the earth.

Which one do you use, and which one is better?

Thanks!

Nate

I had an old Droid Incredible. I loved it. I liked the more in depth user interface. When it died one month out of contract I reluctantly got an iPhone 4S. It took some getting used to but I adapted quickly and liked it. It just worked. The days of battery pulls and weekly restarts were over. But after two years I began to only remember my Droid with fondness. When my battery finally died about 4 months out of contract I switched back to a Samsung Galaxy S4 (free at the time, which was a big deciding factor!). What a mistake I made. The battery is garbage and can not make it through a single day. It freezes up at least once or twice a week requiring a manual restart. The keyboard will "stop" causing it to freeze on the screen requiring a reboot. Often times I'll get kicked out of apps (email, social media) where it will just drop me back to my home screen, sometimes losing my login data. Accessing apps is very slow. I'll not buy another phone outside of the Apple brand. Were it not for my pesky 2 year contract (of which I'm into for about 8 months) I'd ditch this thing and get the new iPhone 6. If I had an extra $800 I'd switch.

If this is true maybe you just need a telephone and not a smart phone...

I have an iPhone 6 and LOVE IT.

I have an Iphone 6 that I really like. IF you want to go bigger, go to the Iphone 6+. My favorite App is the HP 41 emulator. I recently bought a Monster On The Go (OTG) that I use with my phone. It is a WiFi Router/repeater that can connect to SD and Micro SD Cards, and a USB Hard Drive. I plug my external hard drive into it and copy photos from my phone to the hard drive using WiFi. When I do that, I could also access the Hard Drive from my computer as Network Attached Storage. When you use it as a WiFi Repeater, it cuts you speed in half so I don't do that much. I have also hooked it to my router with a CAT 5 patch cord and used it that way. Doing that you don't lose any speed.

Another App that I use is the Theodolite App. I pad about $3 for it. The picture in my Avitar was taken with the Theodolite App. It records direction and position. It you set you Iphone on a Tripod in the open and used a calibrated cloth tape, you could come real close to meeting the minimum standards for large rural boundary surveys using the Theodolite App.

When I got the Iphone 6, they gave me an Android Tablet. It is neat to get to try out the other OS, but I have learned all the tricks for the IOS and don't really want to jump through all fo those hoops again to really learn a new Operating System.

This is a photo taken with the theodolite app.

I really want and need to be able to use the GPS locator, integrated with USGS plats, to find stuff. And, with air photos, to find routes and roads to corners.

Most I-phones or android phones will have the same apps, and do the same things. I use a Galaxy S5 has a nice screen. I have a friend he likes the Note because it has a bigger screen. It sounds like to me you have already sold yourself on a Samsung. Just be sure whatever phone you get to get a nice case to protect it. Amazon has al ot of cases and screen protectors a lot cheaper than the phone stores. You just have to hold your breath you dont drop it before the shipment arrives.

No, I'm not sold on the Samsung. I'm sold on reliability. And, I am not sold on Apple. Since I don't know lots about it's functions, I can more easily change to Samsung now, than later. So, I'm sitting on a fence, wondering. Maybe I'll clean off all these pics the kids loaded it with, (the I-4) and make it work. I do a pre pay plan, for about 50 buks a month.

I have learned, if you need help with one of these things, call a kid! HA!

I haven't had to download pictures manually in several years. Dropbox, Google Drive, and several other free services can be set up so that any pictures you take on the phone are automatically uploaded when your phone has Internet access. You can configure it so that it only uploads with a wifi if you don't want to burn up your data plan. The great thing is that when you get to the office your pictures are already downloaded to your computer and you didn't have to fool with any cables or removable memory.

Everyone has their own preferences, but I'll put a pitch in for AppleCare+. Buy an iPhone 6 (screen size of your preference)...buy the 3 year extended Applecare+, for $99. It's phenomenal insurance. In addition to just replacing your whole phone, your screen (if you drop it down a well, or whatever), you can call them for help, and actually get someone that knows something about the phone. For folks that aren't "techies", this is valuable, even if only calling to figure out "simple" stuff...simple for the kids of course. They're always happy to help.

I have a Note 3 and love it.
Only its a big screen and doesn't like gravel and ouch - its half the price of phone for a new screen.
Having said that its back for repairs as the GPS stopped and Samsung said they don't have issues with GPS so suspect need to do a factory reset which I did to same result.
Sent off to their repairers - different story - a not uncommon issue with Samsung Note 3, 4 phones!!
Dampened my enthusiasm.

Aside it is an excellent phone for other use and the stylus is the icing on the cake for me and I can do pretty neat sketches etc, providing you don't drop it face down on a gravel track:whistle:

My older HTC velocity was/ is rock soild in the GPS area.

You mention the need for that side. Might be worth getting assurance a Samsung is going to keep on going in GPS department. If anyone can say!!

The Note 3 takes impressive photos.

Moved into the Samsung S5 18mos ago and now they have a rugged model S6 that does not need the OtterBox case.
Verizon's Tech Support has walked me thru every problem I've had and answered every question with no delays and if one person doesn't know, another will come onboard and take over.
I do not get copies made, now I use CamScanner to make PDF files anywhere of most everything and email to my office
The compass tool is point and take a picture from setup to backsight to get a direction that is withing a degree of true.
It will take a 128gb micro SD card to hold all the data you will ever need.
Connect to a computer and send any file to any folder the same way as transferring with your desktop, no need for proprietary software handshakes.
Same way for music, video, text and other files.
There is an app for everything imaginable for work or play.
Bluetooth
Wifi
Hotspot
and I never have to ask Samsung or Verizon's permission to download or upload.

If you have an android it will sync your photos to your Google account very easily. Open the "photos" app/settings/back up and sync. Should be self explanatory from there. Once that is setup type "google photos" into Google on your computer. If you're not already logged into gmail then login when it prompts. You're done. Many of you are probably already doing this and don't realize it. crApple does the same thing with icloud.

If you want a good phone get a Nexus 6. It runs pure android and doesn't have any Samsung/HTC/Motorola/etc bloatware.

I had a Samsung S2 for several years. It worked fine, though battery life was marginal for a long day. Last December I upgraded to an S5. Much larger screen, much longer battery life. No complaints, it just works. I thought about waiting for the big Note 5, but decided that it's just too big to carry around all day. The big screen would be nice, but the logistics just didn't work for me.

I prefer Android to iPhone simply because of the "walled garden" nature of the latter. My wife and son have iPhone 6's, and they like them fine. No issues with them, except when my son crunched his in a weight machine. I replaced the screen, but the case was tweaked enough that the new screen "adjusted" to it by cracking. It still works fine, he just has to live with the one big crack that goes all the way across.
