I just know where everything is on the HP48 blindfolded and can program it to do whatever I need and I'd rather spend my time learning other things. I've had the same phone for 5 years while everyone else upgrades theirs to the latest every 6 months.
My 48 will remain on my desk. I have a few backups when it craps out. I only use the calculator on it though.
About two months ago, I was up at a friends house. He's an engineer. He pulled his HP48 from his briefcase when I was talking about my calculator. He asked if it was like this one. I said yes. He said he was issued that particular calculator when he entered West Point the September after we graduated. It still works and he uses it every day. We graduated May 30th, 1995. 🙂
If anyone needs one I saw this over the weekend:

I found one on craigslist a few months ago. It came with the TDS card and the original nice environmental case. Got it for $135, They're still out there!

I got this one out of the box about 15 yrs ago... At one time I owned 4.
Can't find a 48 anywhere, but during the search I came across this cool site for HP aficionados.

Cripes!!! I picked up an HP35 after the 2nd 48 I got used off eBay crapped out. All I need is a little help getting started with it after using a 48 all these years. Guess I'll be scouring the manual tonight... Got to start somewhere I guess.
There are several good programs out there for the 35S. I haven't taken the time to program my two, but others say it is not too hard. I like mine, but only use them for basic survey math.

That's all I'm looking to use it for. Calcing deflections using DMS and so on. Nearly all cogo I do using datacollector. I have the full manual on a CD and I'll get into it tonight. Out doing an asbuilt right now. It's 15* and winds blowing 20 out of the north. Thawing my digits out in truck.
Yikes !! I still use my HP calculators, when I started surveying. Field : HP25 Office : HP 97 both still work well.
The County issued us HP 48's. Gave it to one of our engineers.
