?ÿI am able to insert contours from a shp file using the GIS import, however they all come in on the same layer.?ÿ

Does anyone have any ideas on how to separate out the major (index) contours??ÿ

Perhaps this is something that could be handled using GIS software such as Qgis prior to import to Carlson?

Edit > Selection Sets > Quick Select

Select by elevation, using each index contour elevation with the "Append to Selection Set" box checked on.

Couldn't you create a surface by just the contours, and then re-contour, specifying the separate layers for index and intermediate contours?

Peter,

That works.?ÿ Kind of tedious since it appears that it needs to be repeated for each interval, and the settings keep reverting and have to be reset each time, but better than counting off contours to find the majors.

Yes, we could create the surface from the contours, but would like to try and use the contours that were already generated.

Thanks

If you were to consider third party software, the easiest way is with MapWorks PolyContour Layer Index.

Simply select the polylines, specify parameters and all polylines get relayered.

Request the 30-day full working eval and get this done for free.

You said you're using Carlson Survey:

Try, INDEXCTR

SURFACE/CONTOUR UTILITIES/HIGHLIGHT INDEX CONTOURS

It lets you tell it what interval, and what new layer to change them to.
