We are looking to add another rig to our outfit and are due for a demo of a Leica GS14 and CS20. I am familiar with the GS14 and CS15, however we do not utilize even half of the capabilities of the SmartWorx software. Used primarily for rapid static control, and some network RTK where applicable. We don't use linework so that's not so much a priority. I am under the impression that the CS20 may be too much for our little outfit. We seem to stay jammed up with work with little time to learn new procedures and new technology, so my questions are, what are the benefits of upgrading to a CS20? I have offered input as to increasing our accuracy by including Galileo into our constellations for much less the cost, and if we were to add another unit to our outfit I would prefer it to be something without another new software for the crew to learn. Pros/Cons of the CS20 are welcomed, as well as pros/cons of Captivate software. Also, if you use a CS20, what is the preferred export method??ÿ
Thanks,
Brian
I run that exact setup.
if you are familiar with viva, things are similar (but not the same) in Captivate. Some functions are deeply missed, while others are a welcome improvement.
For fast static it is probably overkill, and if you are doing opus submittal, only GPS is accepted at this point, no glonass, no Galileo.?ÿ
I just output ascii points for project, and output the entire job for archiving.?ÿ
The CS20 is also easier to see in the sunlight then the CS15. We export the ASCII file and do the line with Carlson. I also like how with Leica you can take a picture with the data collector and attached the picture to the point.?ÿ
If upgrading to a newer software platform and the associated learning curve?ÿis a concern you might look into a GS15 instead of the GS14.?ÿ The CS15 with Viva will control both the same but the GS15 has GPS L5 capabilities whereas the GS14 does not.?ÿ If you're working in or near canopy adding that might be something to consider.?ÿ Both antennas already track GLONASS and Galileo, you just need to have those options activated to incorporate them into your solutions.?ÿ

I thought the GS15 is history, no longer shows as a product on Leica's website last I looked.

Might not be available new from the dealer but they're still issuing firmware updates and in my opinion there're every bit the gear the GS14 is.?ÿ

Correct, same measurement engine AFAIK, finding one is the issue now. The style was a little top heavy looking, HOWEVER the hot swappable batteries AND the option to swap the radio module was very cool, sorry to see it go.

You must be exporting to Carlson by XML file to get the linework and photos?

You don't have to use xml, and can export a simple txt file and import into Carlson and run F2F.?ÿ Also, you can export the job file to get all the raw data and pictures.?ÿ They're tagged by the point number, so it's easy to figure out what pic goes with what shot.

I don't really see the point of updating the controller without updating the antenna.?ÿ I demo'ed the GS 15 with the CS 20, and that seemed like a big improvement over the GS14/CS15 setup.?ÿ Better lock under canopy, longer range from network base, and if you're looking to use this as a base for other units, the radio has a longer range so that you don't always need to have a separate radio unit, along with the menagerie of cables, batteries and antenna tripod.
