Folks, I am an older semi retired land surveyor.

Doing some part-time work for a local surveyor, we live in Extremely for Western North Carolina.

Anyway Iƒ??m trying to help him out,?ÿ

He has an older Lieke total station with a thumb drive, He also has an older version of Carlson software.

if my memory serves me correct You have to convert the data so Carlson can read it.

So here are my questions.

what type of file is in the thumb drive,

ascii ?

I assume I have to convert that to a .crd file?

Again if my memory serves me correct we had a separate software program for the conversion?

so in a nutshell what Iƒ??m looking for is how do I go about doing the conversion, And do I need an independent Software program to do the conversions?

I would greatly appreciate some help with my situation.

as I said Iƒ??m just an old surveyor that is some what computer illiterate, Trying to help out another surveyor.

Thanks in advance

I've no idea what type of file that total station will export.?ÿ I think that some of the older Leica instruments had onboard TDS, so maybe it's a rw5 or cr5 file.

Carlson office software will import many raw data file types.?ÿ If it's a cr5, you might have to use SurveyLink or some other type of software to convert.?ÿ But that's just a coordinate file.?ÿ The instrument should be able to spit out raw data in some format, and Carlson may be able to handle that by importing in its raw data editor.

Save a file on the thumb drive.?ÿ Put it in a computer and use File Explorer (assuming Windows) to find it.?ÿ If the file extension does not show* right click on it and select Properties. That will tell you the file type.

* (<rant>that's an optional setting that shouldn't be optional-the extension should always show </rant>)

The older Leica total stations had a rec card in them with a Leica reader to download and convert the TS files, I'm not sure what format they were converted to, but the modern (at least for the last seven years) export .dxf, .dwg and other proprietary files in a format that has to be processed through Leica Infinity software with the post processed points in a .txt file that can very easily be imported into a Carlson .crd file with no special effort.?ÿ

You would be going way back in the Leica/Wild catalog, prior to the 1000 series, to find an instrument with a rec module, let alone finding a working rec module.?ÿ The 1000 & 1100 series instruments stored the data in a GSI type file which is formatted asci text file.?ÿ The older instruments may have had a way to output he GSI file as well, I just have not used one in over 24 years so my memory is getting a little rusty on the subject.?ÿ From the 1200 series (SmartWorks) on, the data is stored in a database but can be exported in GSI format.

Here is a link to an old post that goes into the subject of converting the GSI.?ÿ Leica GSI file converters ƒ?? Software, CAD & Mapping ƒ?? Community Forums for Land Surveying & Geomatics (surveyorconnect.com)

Good luck

Back in the day, we used to download our 1100 GSI file and use a DOS program to convert it to FBK so that we could import it into LDD.?ÿ By "thumb drive" do you mean the old PCMCIA storage cards?

?ÿ

Fun fact--many of the PCMCIA storage cards Leica gave us needed a battery to not lose all the data onboard:

https://www.se.com/ca/en/product/TSXBATM03/main-backup-battery-for-pcmcia-sram-memory-card/

When a crew lost a day's worth of work from out of town and we figured that out...........well, the next day there were quite a few battery orders placed.
