I was wondering the best way to connect a laptop to a tv. I have a small analog converter that I use with an svideo cable, but I have to use external speakers. It is not too big of a deal, but would like to be able to control the volume with the tv remote.

What is the best way to hook up a laptop.to a tv? I do not have a hdmi plug on my laptop.

Thanks in advance

If your TV has a standard RGB port like your laptop likely does, you can buy a cable to connect the two. You can probably get one at Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc.

I use an HDMI cable, but your laptop and TV would have to be HDMI compatible....most new devices are.

Most new TVs have multiple input connections. Map all the input connections for the TV and take the map and the laptop to Radio Shack. They have adaptors if neccessary.

Our HDTV flatscreen has 2 HDMI connections (Best), and RGB (VGA) & audio group, 4 sets of cable groupings and a USB port.

Most likely you will use a VGA cable and a stereo audio cable from your computer to TV.

I have not checked if my RGB/audio grouping actually is stereo but I have stereo splitters from a stereo connection to stereo cables or cable to two of the larger plug audio cables. They are neccessary to split certain audio signals when my laptops are connected to the church's 32 channel sound board, whereas the video signal goes directly to the 4 flatscreens in the worship area. At other times the video projector may get the output. There are separate stereo audio jack pairs also. The TV only has USB software to display a photo album, will not handle a video. To display video from a ISB device I need to use the computer or buy one of the digital storage devices with a USB connection.

With so many different cables and adaptors it is hard to keep track of them. If left at the church they sometimes get borrowed, if left in the computer pouch, which pouch? (3 in my office as I type) If I am at home I do without but when it is a church function I hit Radio Shack and purchase another, because the show nmust go on.

To control the volume from the laptop, you'd probaby need either HDMI (which does carry sound), or use a video only (RBG / S-video / Yellow(AV)) conector AND run an audio cable from the toplap auidio ouput to an audio input on the TV.

It sounds like you are half way there. Find a cable that will connect from your laptop's audio output to your TV's audio input that's associated with your video input.
