I tried turning on my 48 after I purchasde a ramcard battery. I got the Invalid Card warningb and I checked the mounting of the ram card and the survey pro card. Finally it came on and asked if I wanted to erase all data on port 2. I said no. It just sat there. After a couple of minutes I pushed no again and nothing. Then I got REALLY smart and said yes. It still just sat there only this time in a panic I could not turn off the calculator, so I pulled the card, Now it shut off only now when I startup program it tries to load libarary and fails. It tells me to put program card in slot 2 for installing library. Where do I find this library? How do I load onto the calculator? Is there a necessary cable? My old laptop has an infrared port if I need to go that route.
I have to be honest, if my TSC2 had a nice simple Vertical curve program in it like survey pro, I doubt I would need the 48 at all.
Can someone with more knowledge of hp48's please help me out.
Down but not out in Claremore.
I don't have survey pro for my 48 , but I've seen the install procedure posted in this forum before. Someone even posted a link to the manuals. A Google search should get you there.
As I recall all that has to be done is to put the program card in slot two and turn the HP48 on, wait a minute and you will get a message to remove the card ( I think you have to turn the calculator off first ) and put the program card back in slot one with the memory card now in slot two. There is no external program or information needed.
I still use an HP48 with TDS on ocassion and I find it a lot eaiser (a little less powerful - no GPS) than TDS on a Ranger, no problems seeing it in the sun and no bouncing around between routines - my $0.02 worth.

1st-gen tds came with an install card. perhaps you have one tucked neatly away in a drawer. I used to store mine in a pocket on the soft case for the environmental case

STEP 10: the first time you install a RAM card which has not been used previously with TDS 48GX, the unit will prompt "Can I erase all data in port 2" Y/N data on card will be lost if you say Y so be certain you don't need data on the card. in order to continue you must say Y.
STEP 11: First time you insert a Ram Card you may get "Warning invalid card Data. This is normal. Ignore message and proceed. If Ram Card is installed properly and you get "No RAM card in Port 2 the write protect switch on the card is set. Try adjusting the switch.
Hope this helps!
This will be redundant to most of what was just posted above but this is the re-install routine that I had people follow for years:
Instructions to reset HP-48GX with TDS software:
The following instructions detail the steps involved in resetting the HP48GX and reinstalling the TDS software. This procedure is indicated when your HP48GX is “locked up”, not responding normally or does not appear to be functioning properly. Since the TDS programs for the HP48GX store coordinate data directly to the ram card, following the steps below to purge the information contained in the calculator’s working memory should not ever result in a loss of data from the ram card. If you wish, you may remove the TDS Survey card and the ram card as directed in Step 6 before executing the command to clear the calculator memory detailed in Steps 2 through 4. For new data collection package, begin with Step 7.
Step 1 To clear calculator memory, Turn HP48GX on
Step 2 Simultaneously press the [ON], [A] & [F] keys for 3 seconds
Step 3 Release all three keys
Step 4 The display will show "TRY TO RECOVER MEMORY", select [NO] – The calculator memory is now cleared.
Step 5 Next, we want to restore the calculator to factory default settings. To do this, press and hold the [ON] key and then press the [SPC] key (this is the key to the right of the decimal key) and then release the [SPC] key
Step 6 When you release the [ON] key, the HP48GX will go off. This completes the operation to restore factory defaults.
Step 7 Remove both the Survey card and the Ram card from the HP48GX
Step 8 Install the Survey Card in Slot 2 (nearest to you), being sure that it is fully engaged in the slot
Step 9 Turn HP48GX on
Step 10 Press the alpha key twice and key in [TDS48] and press [ENTER], (display will show “Installing library…”, then instruct you to turn calculator off and insert the ram card in Port 2)
Step 11 Press any key (I prefer [ENTER]) then turn your HP48GX off (Green shift & on/off key)
Step 12 Move the Survey Card into Slot 1 & insert Ram card in Port 2
Step 13 Turn HP48GX on
Step 14 Press alpha key twice and key in [TDS48] and press [ENTER] to boot up program. This completes the reinstallation process.
In rare cases, the RAM card may have corrupt data on it that will prevent its being used without issue. If this seems to be the case, you can force the calculator to reformat the RAM card by the following:
Step 1: Press the alpha key twice, then the left shift (purple key) and alpha again. This puts the calculator in lower-case alpha entry mode.
Step 2: Type in [initram] (Must be in lower case] and press Enter.
The above will re-initialize the memory card. It will not affect the installation of the TDS software on the calculator.
Thanks Scott. Those directions worked great. It is up and running. It used to be my DC until I got my robo and the TSC2 and now R8. Wish someone knew how to change out boards in my GNSS-less R8. Trimble won't help me, other than buy a system with. Do you think there is anyone out there with that talent?
Thanks again,
Doug
Thank you Jerry.
This was a very helpful post. Thanks!
