Our HP 500 drive belt is about two plots away from kicking the bucket.. I searched the archives here and found some of you have replaced it yourselves with a repair manual. I was wondering if any of you could email me a copy of the manual and if any of you have any tips on replacing it. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's too big to email but here's a DropBox link to the file. As for tips, just take your time and take pictures or notes if you think you won't remember how to reverse a given step. Its pretty simple if you have a hint of mechanical ability.

I did mine about 6 months ago. It really was not that hard but kind of intimidating. Lots of parts to take off and screws to remove.

My one tip is when you get it apart, take something sharp and clean out the "teeth" on the white gear that moves the belt. It will be built up with parts of the old belt and needs dug out so that it grabs on to the new belt. I failed to do this to mine the first time and had to redo it because there wasn't enough traction.

Its also a good time to give everything a good cleaning and swap out the service station(where it cleans the heads and collects the excess ink). HP recommends a special oil (part #6040-0855)for the slide. Seems like it was a bit pricey but the 4oz bottle will last forever.

Watch oil would probably work for this. Used it for years to lube the spindles on transits when taken apart and cleaned. A little bit on a toothpick will lube a big area.

error codes

The error codes on my HP450C are pretty cool. Mine was acting flaky for a while with a couple orange lights coming on. I would reset it and it would print for a couple more days, then the lights would come on again.

Well I finally opened the service manual and cross-referenced the Orange Lite COdes and t said something, "PUT SOME OIL ON THE BAR ONCE AND A WHILE FOR CRISSAKES."

Thanks for all the help guys. Ordered the belt today from Amazon for $30 and found a video I can study up on before the belt gets here. I'm fairly inclined mechanically (in my opinion) so it shouldn't be too bad. I'll let you guys know how it went after it's back up and running. Thanks again for all the help.
