Can anyone help? I am trying to import a general location map, like a portion of a USGS topo map into Carlson 2012 embedded ACAD. How do I download a map in .jpeg This is my first time at posting a question on this site. Thank You in advance.
My tech says to use a tiff and insert into drawing, rescale, rotate and move to a matching point on your drawing
I do not know the commands, that is his "EASY BUTTON" explanation.
[sarcasm]He makes me work hard to learn everything[/sarcasm]
I don't know if it's the same in Carlson 2012, but in Carlson 2008 I use the Draw/Image/Image Manager pulldown command and then pick Attach Image from the popup window. It will prompt you for insertion point, rotation, scale.
"imageattach" and follow the prompts.

I guess I phrased this question poorly. I am trying to get the general location map off of the internet. I am not sure how to do this or where to look online. What is a good site to find these type of maps?

These are from my 'favorites' all discovered right here at b l dot com.
When you get the map on your screen, such as in Google Earth, Google Maps or any other map, hit Alt-Print Screen. Then open a program like Irfanview (free download) and paste. You can then save it as a .jpg or .tif image for import into your CAD program.
"Draw" Command Pulldown
"Insert Raster Image"
"Add"
Browse, it is best to have your images in your job folder.
If you tansfer your images on a usb drive, make sure the image is there also.
You can open a dwg from a usb drive and if the image is in the same location as the dwg it will find it.
I prefer tiffs but on several recent projects I have tiffs and jpegs.
For any USGS map I use, I first bring it into an empty dwg and save it as a dwg to my USGS folder. It is easier to browse around and print a dwg than a tiff or jpeg.
I bring the image into a project drawing on an image layer outside of my work area.
With image frame on I draw lines along the border then move and/or offset to where I want to clip, almost always rectangular. Put your lines to the front and image to the back using "Display Order". I usually create two long leader lines from my clip corners to well ouside my image.
If you zoom or scroll and the lines disappear "Regen" to see them.
Now use "Edit"
"Image Frame", "Image Clip", "Image Adjust" accordingly.
I pick my clip corners by snapping to the endpoints of my constructed lines.
Even if you cannot see them you will see the snap box when you get close.
I then use snap to the image frame to move the image into my dwg work area, rescale and rotate if necessary. After a test plot I usually fiddle with image adjust, 50% fade is a good start point. Brightness and contrast at your pleasure. Once it is set I usually turn image frame off and lock the image layer.
Sites that I use give me a choice on images to download, if I am not rushed, I'll grab both a tiff and jpeg.
