I was curious as well and it turns out you can install the full version in evaluation mode right off the support site. Limit 30 points though, similar to SurvCE eval.

I've used TDS with the HP41 and Nikon total stations for about ten years, Leica software with Leica GPS for about ten years, and Survey Pro with Topcon GPS for about ten years, I just started with Survey CE on a Surveyor 2, with the X90+ GPS. Once you get past the thinking of "I used to do this before" and surrender to the software's way of doing things, you begin to like the new. The same seems to go with Cad and Surveying software. Coming up with a system that is the most productive is usually the challenge.

Bingo, I have said for years, I don't care what you use, just make it all the same color.

Since Carlson started selling their own hardware, other vendors are making it harder for Carlson to support the newest GNSS and Robotics. I know people with latest Lieca, Sokkia and Topcon that are waiting and hoping Carslon support it.

In the near future if not already some equipment will only be operating under vendor specific software.

Sokkia promotes "open platform" on the new ix. The drivers are the same for SRX, SRX-X, SX & DX robots, seems ix would be the same.
That whole Hexagon group thing is an odd relationship. Multiple brands of Leica TS's but they act like their proprietary equipment.

I don't know what they mean by open platform. But Pmoran whom replied in another thread is a Sokkia/ Topcon rep and explained that those are NOT the correct driver's for iX. Although they may seem to work, you won't be able to control iX specific features such as rotary speed.

Makes total sense that new features couldn't be full optimized using an older driver. SurvCE 5.04 does have iX drivers, I just don't have an iX...

Open platform, meaning they are open to and will work with 2nd party software developers such as Carlson and FieldGenius.

Even if I wanted to use something other than Trimble, we're so locked into it that it would be impractical. Their workflow is outstanding; with TCC I can easily and quickly communicate data to and from the field crews in real time and TBC is great for most basic processing tasks. Processing static data in TBC is fantastic, although I do wish their network adjustment software was a bit better.

I absolutely love J-Field from Javad. It is GNSS only, and I have no problems integrating it with my own data collector for the robot. I will admit that the robot has been getting rather lonely the past few years.

Can you easily pull an ASCII file off of it and load it into the data collector?

I love TCC. I never have to connect my data collector to my computer anymore since I setup TCC. Also, it's an instant backup of the job file as soon as the field tech syncs. It's very useful for setting BFE TBMs from static data when doing preliminary elevation certificates. The crew collects the static and syncs the job on the data collector. I get an email when it's been uploaded so I can grab it for processing. I upload to Trimble RTX PP service, then just call, text, or email them the processed result so they can mark the BFE.

As far as I know all of the major data collection players offer some variation of this service.

Leica (Hexagon) now owns FG, FG won't run the scanning feature of the MS60.

We're full blown Civil3D 2017 as we have in house Civil Engineers. Importing the Style Sheets of the line work seems to work pretty darn good. As much as Autodesk drives me crazy with their pricing model, especially with the newest change to full subscription, I don't see us moving away from that platform given our service offering and Client base.

That takes all of three seconds to do.

I don't think I'm as fast as John, it takes me more than 3 seconds just to insert the thumb drive. But it's pretty quick, in any case.

Of even greater importance to me is that I can export a g-file just as quickly. I routinely do this to adjust my RTK vectors in Star*Net.

I think that trend may continue, I see that in the Class 8 truck market too, used to be you could specify an engine, transmission, etc. in just about any truck, now it is becoming more make specific, I think you can still get a Cummins in any make but otherwise it is limited, you can do much tighter integration with all components when all from same make and I suspect that is what is driving the vendor specific hardware/software with data collection too. I honestly wouldn't want to be in the 3rd party data collection business with these trends afoot and may be why Carlson has entered the hardware side of the market.
