I just bought the latest ortho photos from my County and City GIS departments. In the past they have always had .sid files that I can open, export a tiff world file for what I need for that job to insert in my CAD drawing. The County's images are in .ecw format this time. I'm trying to find a viewer that I can export a tiff world file from or find an application to convert it into .sid files. Anyone have any experience with this?
I have Carlson 2011 with a GIS module, but it only seems to work with tiff or sid images.
Gary
Have you tried inserting the *.ecw file as an image file without converting it to a *.tif file ? Works with *.pdf files and some other files.
Neither AutoCad 2006 nor Carlson 2011 recognize the .ecw format. I need some type of viewer that will open a .ecw file and hopefully extract a geotiff.
ACad 2006 will recognize several image formats if you install the Raster Design Object Enabler tool.

Hi Gary,
If you have Carlson 2011 with IntelliCAD, try this:
1. From the Settings menu, click Carlson Menus -- IntelliCAD Menu.
2. From the IntelliCAD menu, click Image -- Attach Image.
3. Select ECW (*.ecw) from the "Files to type" drop-list.
I don't have any sample files to try this out, so this is about the best course of action I can suggest for now.

Not sure if the free version will convert to tif, but the paid version, for the money, is a great bit of software.
One of the nice things is you can load multiple tiled image files, windowbox just your area of interest and export to geotiff.

Thanks for the link. I installed it and can view the file; however, it doesn't come in to scale or in the SPC83 coordinates. But at least I can see it.
Thanks.

This might be the ticket. The trial version doesn't allow export; however, if nothing else pops up I may go ahead and spend the $349 for this program.

Gary-
FWIW, That's the ONLY program I've ever bought that I've NEVER cursed at.
I've found their support to be more than adequately responsive, too.

I agree,
[REDACTED] is one of the best value for the money spent software packages that I have ever purchased.

If you`re using plain ACad then it doesn`t understand the georeferencing information in the image file. You need ACad Map or Civil 3d for that.

We use the free ER Viewer software for working with images. It will convert to several common formats and it allows you to change the image resolution.
ECW Image Files - Found it
I found a free viewer that will read .sid and .ecw files and export cropped portions of project areas as a GeoTiff with a world file so that they can be inserted using the "geotiff" command in Carlson.
The program is called GeoViewer 5.0 by LizardTech. Works great, simple to use, not many bells and whistles, just what I need.

Thanks for the responses and help.

You call yourself that, but when I look at your avatar all I see is a black-and-white dog......maybe it's all a matter of perception.;-)
Okay, sorry for the hijack just trying to make a kind of joke.

Hey GreyWolfe
Actually, I call myself Gary. GreyWolfe is my company name. I have a grey wolf rug from my time surveying in Alaska and it seemed like a good name when I started my company.
The Avatar is Joy, spends about every minute of the day with me whether I'm in the field, running errands, or drafting in the office. Border Collies are smarter than a lot of people I dealt with over the years.

Thanks for the tip Ladd. I am inserting the *.ecw file, but it is coming in very small. Any ideas? I am using Carlson GIS 2017 with Intellicad.
I have that noticed when georeferenced images are no to scale, they are often scaled by a factor of meters to feet.
Have you tried changing units.
Thanks Lee. I'll try that when I can get back on that later this afternoon.

Early morning typing looks pretty bad. That should have said:

Just like a .tif comes with a .tfw World File, a .ecw should come with .eww World File. That should get you started importing the .ecw into the correct location.
Once it is in the right location, if it has to be rescaled it is easier. From the reference point corner of the image, you should have a distance to a field GPS point that is within the image. That is one way to scale it. Georeferenced images usually have a fixed size, from PA they are 10,000' by 10,000' or 5,000' by 5,000' and they come in at that scale with me needing to put them in the right place. An image from another source may need to be scaled which I do to a correct size polyline grid frame.
Carlson has the option, "Place the Image by World File" which prompts you for the associated World File.
Scans from paper based images and linework can come in at different x & y scales which is usually close enough for my purposes.
.jpg, .png & .bmp files require more work.
