I wonder if anyone here is using C3D to automatically plot their instrument setups, their backsights, and draw lines from instrument to the sideshots? (a way to see where everything was located from).

If you know how to do it, can you give me a little info on how you do it?

I saw an example of this at the bottom of this web page:

http://docs.autodesk.com/CIVIL/2010/ENU/AutoCAD%20Civil%202010%20User%20Documentation/index.html?url=WS1a9193826455f5ff-4855151011e3b702b957015-process.htm,topicNumber=d0e313877

they talk about using a .fbk, but we don't use those in our F2F system. (We just have an Import Event and descriptor keys, etc.)

Just wondering if there was another way.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

This happens in Civil 3D when you import the FBK file into the survey network. The FBK file contains the Setups, BS, and SideShots information. And the Survey Network Style controls the way the Lines are displayed. The .fbk file is created from your Raw data file.

So if all you have is a Coordinate file this won't give you what you want. Its needs the Setup points and angles and distances to produce the network.

Sort of hard to explain without additional information from you like:

What survey equipment do you have (Data collector). I will be more than willing to help you with this. feel free to contact me directly.

Mike

Thank you, Mike.

We don't currently use a fbk file involved in our importing. I hear those things are real picky, although I have no personal experience with this.

Would it be the case that I could automatically create a fbk during import? Or would I have to do a lot of setup for it?) We do have a raw data file along with the coord file. (We use the newest(?) TDS software).

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

That is a misconception, there is actually a tool in Civil 3D (Survey Data Connection Link) found on the Create Ground Data Panel of the Home Tab in Civil 3D.

This is an old TDS tool... you can take your RAW file and convert it to the FBK. In most modern collectors you can even export the fbk directly form the controller.

Then import the fbk in to the Survey Database.

There is no setup needed to get this far. You will be able to see the network and manage the data per setup, etc...

The setup needed for Field to Finish(which can take some time) Doing this will help your data come into the drawing so that points get placed on the proper layer with the proper style, and the lines you collected in the field get automatically drawn and assigned the proper style. (The Field to Finish)

Basically to get the Field to Finish you need:

A Drawing template with a Description Key Set (the keys in this set must be what your field crew is using)
Point Styles
Point Label Styles
Figure Styles

A Figure Prefix Database, which is a separate file that corresponds to the Description Key Set
A Line Code Set, which is used to tell C3D how to draw the lines.

Once everything is setup the Process of taking raw data from the controller to the Drawing and having a map and even surface should only take a few minutes.

The other things the Survey Portion of Civil 3D can do is balance and adjust your traverse.

Your TDS will work perfectly with Civil 3D...

I use an .fbk becerts them to survey points, which can't because survey points cant be 'moved' like drawing points can...which if you have others working on a drawing can happen.
