How would one go about using the topo data that's collected with a total station to adjust the DTM that was created in Pix4d.

I have Carlson civil suite, civil 3d (I'm not good at it yet.), [REDACTED], qgis, and arcgis.

I trimmed out the point cloud of all the offending tree canopy but when I create the DTM in pix4d, it interpolates across the "blank area" rather strangely. I'd like to use my points that I collected under the canopy to have the correct heights.

In Civil 3D you could create a surface from the DTM and then add your total station pints to that surface and rebuild it. I haven't used Carlson in a while but I seem to recall the process was similar in it as well. Good luck, I'll be interested in how it turns out.

In Carlson, I would bring in the drone dim with 3D faces. Then delete tha bad 3D faces and add your TS points. Then rebuild the Carlson Surface using 3D faces and points.

"How would one go about using the topo data that's collected with a total station to adjust the DTM that was created in Pix4d."

Depends on what your deliverable or end result you want. These terms now have different meaning. The DTM created by Pix4D is a Raster GeoTiff image file. Not triangles, like Carlson and InRoads would have it. So there is no way to add points to the Pix4d DTM.

This is the underlying difference between creating surfaces with drones vs conventional topo. If I told you the answer on this forum, then my secret would be out for all the world. It has taken me hours of testing to find this solution. Call me....

In [REDACTED] import the DTM as a point cloud and delete the bad areas. Import the survey points as a CSV (or CAD breaklines) then user all the data to build a triangulated grid. Contour and export.

Which triangulated grid file will Carlson accept. I've tried several different exports but Carlson fails to import them.

Will Carlson create a tin from contours?

What I was thinking is if you created a TIN from contours and one from point data and merged them, but I'd never done it, so I just tried and it didn't work so well?

No easy one step solution. I find it best to create breaklines and spot elevations from the point cloud (using mouse & PC, similar to the way you would use prism pole in field, Carlson Point Cloud or TopoDot), then add your supplemental topo. If you try to create a model from contours, it will be very poor model. You will need to add the inferred breaklines. InRoads will attempt this, and works better than Carlson. Still not a good solution.
