This has always baffled me.

Assume that I cause Carlson to draw 5 points on the screen, all of which are sewer manholes. I want to draw a symbol of a manhole (circle with S in middle), so I go to the DRAW SYMBOLS routine, and select the symbol. I set a size of 4 for the symbol. I also set the layer to "Manholes."

I go about clicking points or entering point numbers to draw my symbols.

Then I move on in the drawing, and might draw a bunch of fence posts, and I want to set a symbol size and layer for the fence posts that will look good with my drawing.... and so on.

But Carlson keeps changing my manhole symbol sizes when I do other symbol sizes.

So my question is this: Is there a way to keep the symbol sizes of my manholes from changing unless I intentionally try to change them?

the symbol size is set under the drawing setup menu..if you set it there, the size should stay the same...alternatively, you could use the field to finish and set the size there, but you would need to create points.

Lock The Manhole Layer

You can add more manholes to a locked layer but you need to unlock it to edit them in any way.

Typically I lock my utility pole layer once my pole symbols are inserted. I also lock the layers with my "inlets", "soil log" symbols and "Benchmark" symbols.

On other layers I do not lock my point symbol sizes as I change them for a survey detail plan that is a different scale than the output survey. A survey detail may contain 6 to 12 lots, while the survey product has one lot and partial lots.

I have had different point sizes on various unlocked layers and they do not resize unless I use the resize command. You may want to change your settings.

Something don't sound right about this. I haven't had my manholes or other symbols change size once they were in the drawing. I don't know where to tell you to look, other than this isn't normal, or at least shouldn't be.

I agree. One test would be to use the insert command rather than the menu pull down. I have a feeling that the insert block command will not have this problem. Your menu may be corrupted. Are you using the Intellicad version? Reloading the latest build from the Carlson website may fix your problem.
Either way, once a block is installed, it should never change insertion scale all by itself.

I've never really liked that insert symbol command. Running it by point number somehow inextricably links you to that point, and some later commands related to points will affect the symbol.

I agree with other responses in this thread, previously inserted blocks shouldn't change size or position with the insertion of a different block. The only reasons I could possibly fathom that might produce this kind of behavior is through the use of dynamic blocks or possibly the re-defining of the changing block if its name is used within the block being inserted.

If you'd care to offer the Carlson build number and version of CAD that is producing the behavior, I'll be happy to attempt to identify the problem.

Ladd,

It is 2013 and 2014 civil/survey, latest upgrades.

This has always been a significant problem with Carlson software, at least from my perspective.

I think there is a necessary desire by any cad operator to be able to draw the symbols supplied by Carlson at the desired scale, and not have Carlson change them if you ever decide to resize point attributes. It is common to need to resize point attributes to be able to see them in cluttered areas WITHOUT resizing all of the symbols you drew such as manholes, etc.

I have been using Carlson Survey since 2007 and have NEVER had this problem, but then I NEVER use the Draw Symbol pull down and I think that is where the problem lies. Try using the insert command instead and see if this clears up the problem for you. If so Ladd can focus the programmers onto that command.
(Also, I am now using Carlson Survey 2010 and my Draw Symbol command does not change the size of existing symbols as you report, so the field narrows down even more!!)

There's nothing quite as cool as having all your water valve or manhole symbols reduced to the size as a P-K nail.:'(
