I'm trying to modify the file carlson.dwt to add my standard layers, but I can only open the file read only. Is this the wrong way to go about setting up a template?
Do you happen to be running Windows 7?
Don't have it in front of me (using Intellicad), but from what I remember we just took an older DWG with our layers/layouts and either did a "save-as" or "export" under "File" and DWT was one of the options.
you could overwrite the carlson.dwt, but we made another in the same directory (my documents/local settings..... something like that) you can pick using startup wizard.
Hope it helps, but you might want to wait for an "expert" opinion
I've tried to open the existing .dwt file and the saveas method, but haven't had any luck with either method.
Yeah Windows 7. I did notice the support folder was toggled as read only, but I thought I took care of that by un-toggling the read only option for the support folder through Windows explorer. Maybe I need to reboot or the problem is deeper than that. Any ideas?
Thanks
Can't you just save it as another name? And then go in and delete the old one, and either re-name the new one, or just live with the new name?
Unchecking the "Read Only" appears to have no effect in Windows 7.
Windows 7 has the lovely "permissions" that you have to get around. You can have Administrator priviledges, but that does not matter.
Click on the file and then select the properties tab, dig down and find the tab that allows tou to edit that file and double click on the user name for your computer and change the settings to allow you to change stuff. You have to play around with it all some but it will finally accept the change and all will be well.
I do hate that feature in Windows 7.
Windows 7 is a PIB and will not allow you to modify a file and then save it if you do not have "permission" to change that file. I hit the exact same deal with modifying my FLD files.:-@
I am able to copy the SURV.dwt (my default template) file to the desktop, or anywhere, modify it, save as a .dwt (important), I call it RFB.dwt, and use that file for my template.

Be aware that there are typically two locations (by default) where DWT template files are stored:
1. Under the "Program Files" folder structure. This is the folder location where the installer will deliver what I call a "protected archive" copy of blocks, DWT files, SHX files, etc. These files are managed by Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Newer Windows operating systems won't typically let you modify contents under the "Program Files" location and if it does, you'll need to perform the updates in a less protected folder on your computer (e.g. your Desktop) and then copy the revised file over the top of the old one. I don't generally endorse this procedure.
2. Under a "User" folder structure. As the software fires up for the first time, it copies the "protected archive" files from the "Program Files" folder to a "User" folder location that permits you modify the files to suit individual needs. However, newer Windows operating system conventions can make locating the folder(s) a bit challenging. A relatively simple way to locate the desired folder structure is to use the %AppData% variable in the File -- Open dialog box and then "drill-down" to the desired folder (usually the SUP folder under the Carlson Software path):

It'd be this folder location where changes to your file(s) should be made as they are being made at the "User" level. I hope this information helps.
Thanks for all the replies. I created a .dwt elsewhere and selected the startup template under the drawing setup settings. I was then prompted if I wanted to overwrite the carlson.dwt file with the newley selected template.
