I'm just wondering if anyone has figured out if the Intellicad version of Carlson will allow you to set the background of a PDF or image to "transparent"??ÿ I've searched here and found others with similar issues.?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ

I have to overlay a city map with different permitting zones on top of an aerial image.?ÿ The city map has a solid white backround with black linework for the different zones.?ÿ I know that in Autocad i was able to see just the black linework and the white background disappeared, leaving the aerial image visible.?ÿ ?ÿ

I've tried all the different image formats, turning on "transparency" and searched the Carlson Knowledge base.?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ

Maybe there's some other setting in the thousands to choose from that I'm missing???ÿ?ÿ

?ÿ

thanks for any help.

?ÿ

Have you searched the open source Intellicad forums??ÿ I got around this issue once for a vicinity map by using the snapshot command in adobe and then pasting that into photoshop and saving as a jpg.?ÿ Intellicad handles jpg well, including levels of transparency (fade).?ÿ All of our different intellicad programs use the pdfattach command but limits the what you can do with the image.?ÿ I found the resulting pdf image when printed is subdued anyway.

Intellicad handles jpg well, including levels of transparency (fade).

Mine (2016) used to. ?ÿThen suddenly the fade adjustment stopped working. ?ÿI should say, the fade adjustment worked fine on the screen, but would not print this image at all to pdf similar to what is seen on Andyƒ??s screen shot.

Carlson blames some Windows update. ?ÿI have tried to update the video card drivers. ?ÿI tried to upgrade to latest Carlson. ?ÿWas not worth the trouble.

Andy, maybe search here for some of my relatively recent threads about image fade transparency. ?ÿMaybe something will help you? ?ÿI have been using Geotiff images though, not pdf.

edit- when it worked well, I simply selected the image and then changed the fade in properties (usually from 0 to 50). ?ÿThere is also a transparency on/off yes/no option in the properties window that is not as elegant for my taste.

Probably not something as simple as drawing order then?

@brad-ott?ÿ

?ÿ

Yes, thanks, I had searched before posting and saw those.?ÿ ?ÿThe reason I want Transparency is to be able to see where the homes are in relation to the black lines on the map and that removed the white background.?ÿ ?ÿFade simply dims the whole image.?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ

?ÿ

So there is still transparency on/off but apparently it DOES NOTHING>?ÿ?ÿ

One solution is to convert your raster map to a bitonal image. Each pixel will be either a 0 or a 1 value. The 1s will be displayed, and the 0s will be transparent, because nothing is there. This will eliminate the white background. The Irfanview image processing program can make this conversion easily.

@andy-j roger that. ?ÿMaybe bluebeam has a solution outside of CAD? ?ÿI have seen an engineer client of mine overlay two PDFs on top of each other using bluebeam, somehow. ?ÿIt was pretty neat.

@peter-lothian?ÿ

?ÿ

Interesting... I downloaded that and am poking around.?ÿ I don't see anything that covers "bitonal" images or transparency.?ÿ ?ÿLots of options though, excellent software.

?ÿ

?ÿ

UPDATE.... Just off the phone with Carlson and learned a new thing to share about this...?ÿ

highlight the image file?ÿ

Properties tab

General?ÿ

Transparency?ÿ ?ÿ.... Is default set to "by layer"?ÿ but you can simply type in a number there and it will change the percentage transparency.?ÿ ?ÿ Not sure why that's not a pulldown to show the options, but I digress

Still doesn't simply drop the white background but at least it's a decent workaround.?ÿ?ÿ
