I haven't had any problems. Crashes are very rare. I have it installed on a desktop running Windows 7 and on a laptop running Windows 8. Both work fine.
Mostly I do small boundary maps, topo's up to a few thousand points and construction setup.
I've read several posts critical of Intellicad. I don't dispute anyone's experience but as for myself I haven't had any problems.
I think the discussion gets biased because people are less likely to write a post if everything is working the way it is suppose to.

For my 9-5 I use Acad based Carlson 2014.
For my own personal use which is similar to yours, I decided to purchase Carlson Intellicad 2015.
The functions in the command line are sometimes different between Acad/Intellicad, but I haven't found anything I can't do yet.
is ICAD the same as ProgeCAD
Really it is just based on your personal preference. I've been using ACAD from the early days and am so used to the commands and quick keys for it that I am more productive with it. I tried Intellicad and really it is a great program. There are some quirks but what program doesn't have some. I use it at home to do small jobs and to hone my skills on using a different program. If I really had to use it, it would do the job. Might take some time to get used to the differences. I do like the support for Intellicad better than ACAD.
