This setup has been rock solid stable for the past 2+ years. Before today I could count on one hand the number of times that the AutoCAD/Carlson combo has crashed on me. Today it's developed a strange quirk where using the Match Layer command is guaranteed to cause a crash as soon as I click on an object on the target layer after selecting the items to be changed.
I've changed drawings, ran audits, repaired the installs for AutoCAD and Carlson and yet the issue persists. My SSD drive is nearly full and I've had a new larger one on my desk for a few weeks. I suspect either a critter is lurking on my system or I'm seeing early signs of drive failure. I had intended to just migrate to the new drive but now I'm seeing a fresh install from the ground up in my near future.
[sarcasm]I thought computers were supposed to make life simpler.[/sarcasm]
Does it happen with all drawings? Is this ICAD? (can't be much help there) Try a purge? any rogue x-refs? As a last resort, write-block your data, open new file, re-insert.
Probably it isn't Carlson or the drawing file. Probably it is something with your computer. Have you run a virus scan?
I've spent too much time over the years fighting stuff like this. I ran through the usual trouble shooting suspects with no luck then threw in the towel.
When I first set this computer up I imaged the system drive before I loaded any software, and again on a separate disk after I had installed my basic software and customizations. I keep all of my data off of the OS drive so I can nuke it when needed. It's still a pain but it's quicker to reinstall the image than it is to look too deep for the problem. Now if after I reinstall the image it still acts up then I'll know Windows update or something similar has wiped me out.
Have you cleared out the Temp folder recently? As trash builds up in there it will eventually affect the normal operation of the software, leading to more crashes.
Nah, this was so specific and repeatable that I quickly decided that it was a damaged file. I've seen similar problems in the past when a HDD is starting to go bad. You keep putting band-aids on missing or damaged files like a game of whack-a-mole until on day the HDD eats a critical file and the computer will no longer boot. In this case my OS and programs were all on a SSD that was nearly full and has been running almost 24/7 for two years. It was only a matter of time before it ate something.
I've already swapped out the drives and reinstalled the image. Now I'm letting Windows update do its thing. I'll create a new image of the OS drive after the updates are installed then I'll slap a fresh AutoCAD/Carlson install on here and be back in the saddle.
I've had the exact same problem. I'm getting a new PC soon.
I've been busy playing catch-up today. The new drive plus software reinstall seems to have taken care of the issue.
Might be what I need to do on my old system. Hmmm... I am getting crashes like crazy and it seems to be during the zooming/panning.
Looks like I am too late. But the match layer ~ crash situation sounds like something I remedied in the past by messing with PROFILES in the OPTIONS or PROPERTIES settings...?
I think I saved a new PROFILE and called it ABC123 or whatever. That seemed to be the magic bullet, I have no idea why it worked?
Cleanup your OS drive if it's getting full. I've got a 256gb SSD OS Drive and it slows the computer ridiculously when it is close to full.
