We're using Civil 3D 2013. We're generating linework by connecting our survey points using polylines. After finishing, we save and close. When we reopen the drawing, the same polylines have retraced in the opposite direction and closed the polyline. We don't know why and can't find any settings to keep it from doing it. Has anyone seen this before?
Thank you,
Rob Cross
That is very odd, never have I heard of that one before!
Are you using the SurveyDatabase?
Is this just one drawing, or all of them?
Are you drawing using the transparent command PointNumber, or are you drawing using OSNAPs to the nodes?
Can you post a screenshot?
"Can you post a screenshot?"
Is that supposed to be funny?
Jim,
For the record, Rob posted the same question on the Civil 3D Forum, and on that Forum I also asked him for a screen shot to illustrate the problem. And I asked him to post his drawing. You can post a drawing on the C3D Forum, but not here.
Dave
Jim, no. Posting screenshots is a valid tech support tool
Thanks for the replies. Sorry I made the post and didn't reply sooner; just super busy. I can't post of screen shot but can email the drawing to anyone that thinks they can help.
Yes, we are using the survey database. The survey tech is using the PL (polyline) command and using osnaps>nodes to connect between points.
It's only in one drawing and appears intermittently. It's not doing it right now. It's really strange.
If you want to take a look at the drawing, my email address is my screen name/user name at gmail.
Thank you.
Rob,
No prob on the slow reply.
Im the same way... to busy being a surveyor to spend a whole lot of time on the forum.
Anywhoo... a 2D polyline will close on itself generally only if the operator commands it so. This sounds like a corrupt drawing. I hope you don't have too much data in it.
But since you're using the DataBase, you can drop the points into a fresh drawing real easy. It's all the other linework that will take some doing to get over into a new drawing.
Is this drawing one that was started in a previous release, and then built upon, and built upon?
Hi Craig,
No sir. It was started in Civil 3D 2013. LOL, it contains topo for about 60 miles of corridor. It just started doing this a couple of days ago.
We found a work around so I guess we'll just have to keep using it.
Only 60 miles of topo? that's it? 🙂 (That was meant to be funny.)
Yeah, workaround should be Civil3D's middle name.
Good luck, and sorry it's trying to kick your butt. Finding the solution to intermittent issues like this often take longer than just working around it and getting the job done,
Craig
Dave,
Thank you for your reply on the AutoCAD forum. I can't get back on to reply there.
Thankfully, this line is almost complete and we haven't had the same problems with the other line. I don't really care for Civil 3D and we have Carlson installed on our computers, too. The survey tech decided to start it in Civil 3D so that's what we are stuck with.

Lesson learned, hopefully? Gonna put C3D in a coffee can, right? So it cannot reach out and hurt you guys again next time.
LOL, I'm sure it will happen again on the next project. If it were my call, I'd do as you suggest. I use Carlson to adjust traverse and process conventional data. I opened Civil 3D for the first time yesterday to see if I could fix it on my computer.
My workaround for Civil3D is to only use C3D for the cad engine and run Carlson over the top of it. I want to stay productive and keep my hair (what little bit I have left). BTW, If you are running Autocad 2015, get the SP2 that came out 2 days ago. Major stability boost. I was almost on the verge of reverting back to 2013.
