I am trying to use an ArcGIS online map as a background map.?ÿ I was wondering if anyone had any experience in this area.

Can't answer your question directly. If ARC GIS can export a georeferenced image that could be used. We use Bing Maps on line. It's a choice in the software. Of course you have to be connected to the internet to use it.?ÿ
You can exchange an area file in the ESRI .shp or .zip format. And set that as a map background drawing.?ÿ
