Set up at 405 bs 404 it looks like there are some issues.

Line 262 shows an angular error of 8 minutes 56 seconds on a check shot

Line 276 then shows 4 minutes and 06 seconds

?ÿ

Did something happen at that set-up??ÿ Depending on which way it swings, that looks like it would knock out about half the mistake.?ÿ But it still wouldn't be acceptable closure.

Looks like a possible problem at Stn 462

I notice that Dave has centering errors set to zero. Iƒ??d put them at 0.005 and see what effect that has.

Better. If you dialed the target centering up to 0.01 - not unreasonable - it would pass chi-square, I think.

Also, the angle error of 4ƒ? might be a bit optimistic, depending on the field procedure, the last time the instrument was collimated, the condition of the tripod, tribrach, and glass, etc.

@fairbanksls what you mean hide it lol. They have it all. They either refuse to analyze or don't know how. They see the closure and say run again.?ÿ

@fairbanksls Well they are just one client and they use all different stuff than me so from the beg they always just wanted the text/rw5 file from me which i thought was weird but yea.. So heres the odd thing to me i ran 4 traverses on 4 adjacent sites here ranging from 12-28 ac. Im using a robot. I started 1st traverse and tranlated rotated to calc point 62/63 about 1/4 way through trav. inversed 1.63ft at the end. I started 2nd traverse from 2 of trav ones points in order to tie travs together. Those points happen to be right there beside the 2 points i used for t&r as they were a lot line splitting the middle of the two adjacent parcels. So not knowing yet that the t&r had affected my points like this, i held the same 2 points for t&r on the 2nd traverse in a new file, assumed coords, just like i started trav 1. Ran this trav around and inversed 1.6 ft again. Same two points held for t&r and damn near same error on closing inverse. So i was like ok on trav 3 im not adjusting to calc file and lets see what happens. Closed fine. On trav 4 i used a different program in my collector to trans and rot to the calc file which ill post pic of that screen. Doing it this way my trav closed fine. So thats what makes me think using same two points for adjustment, got same closure error almost on 2 diff traverses side by side, that the adjustment is what has messed things up. I mean im pretty careful when traversing as far as shooting clear shots, making sure instrument is locked on prizm, making sure level bubble is dead on and even the rod is situated the same way every time. Im getting 0.01 or less backsight checks everytime. Its not me turning these angles either. So with the above data, its hard for me to understand as ive never seen starnet data before but does this take into account the t&r messing me up or are we at the conclusion that the two almost identical error closures on 2 different travs holding the same 2 points to trans and rot to was a coincidence and that there was actual errors that took place in diff areas of the trav? If i didnt close the next two traverses just fine after these first two and the only thing i did differently was not use that t&r function I would be asking diff questions. But with 4 traverses back to back and being able to test that theory to see if i got diff results by not using that particular t&r function, its stuck in my mind that that was the culprit.?ÿ

Last question to anyone. On this 1st trav, if i can post the first few runs of trav before the adjustment was done which will reflect the busted trav and then post those same few runs after restoring the file back to the point right before the adjustment was done, wouldnt we be able to tell what that adjustment did to the 3-4 trav points prior to the time the adjustment was made vs what they looked like with no adjustmnt at all? I can restore the file back to when this was done but i lose all my points after that adjustment then. But hell if i can see the diff in those few trav points maybe i can bring the other points back in to the restored file and have them changed the same amount. ok youre prob confused af right now. lol sorry. Im set to finish re running trav 1 tomorrow so i guess if i really do need to re run trav 2 i will. I was hoping I could rectify it and avoid that but.. about 4 days of re running traverse for free! Love it! Thanks guys

@Ricklife

I don't have time to help with this, but curiosity got the best of me.

A few things that jump out at me.

  1. Your dates and times in the raw data are off by 11 years and change. Example "Check Point: Date: 2/22/11, Time: 16:30:28.000".
  2. It appears you only turn single angles. Suggest you try double angles or set collection on traverse points.
  3. Looks like you started at point 400 and just let the controller increment the point number for every turn there after and did not seperate the traverse points from sideshots.

At a quick glance at your raw data, I can see why the office may not want to handle this. Not sure how long you've been "surveying" on your own, but your point management skills are nonexistent. Suggest you separate your traverse points from your side shots to make this process easier on everyone and do not adjust anything in the field. Also correct the date and time in controller. This will help if you have to present this raw data in court.

There is something strange in your raw data. The dates jump around. It goes from the 22nd to the 19th to the 24th then 25th then back to 24th then the 22nd. How do your dates go back in time? It would be really tough to defend this work should someone question it.

I tossed all the data into TBC just for kicks yesterday, and this was my conclusion as well. It took a lot more cleaning up than a basic traverse should. With a program like Survey Pro, it's critical to get those points numbered correctly.

I finally got a network adjustment to pop out and everything looks good statistically, but there's so little redundancy that I can't do much with the data; there are only so many outlier observations that I can turn off.

Also it looks like there are some cross-ties in there? I can't tell because there's at least one or two observations (in addition to the backsight observations) that have incorrect numbers and flags of 50+ feet horizontal.

This is part of the reason that I will always relevel/recenter and close the horizon on critical traverses...gets some redundancy and at least a measure of independency too. Plus it's just a good check on Hz angles. If you're already set up and crank that first angle set, it takes very little effort to just switch BS/FS, recenter the instrument and get another set. Gets you the benefits of running a traverse backwards and forwards with only 10% additional effort.

As Mark Mayer/Norman Oklahoma (I always think of them as Dr. Jekell & Mr. Hyde) suggests, it passes Chi Square if the target centering is changed to 0.01 foot.

Here is the traverse closure from StarNet:
