I don't have a collector in front of me so I may not be using Trimble's terminology here but if I remember right in the options for a given GPS style you can set how many measurements you want a topo shot (for example) to make.

Say I set this at 3.?ÿ My question is if I take a shot with this setting I get the option to store the point after a few seconds, but the timer continues to run.?ÿ If I don't hit store am I continuing to collect position data??ÿ Or does that stop after the set 3 and the timer is just for informational purposes?

Good question.

Yes, and the longer you occupy the data gets worse and better as the constellations change as the data changes from departing and approaching satellites into the sky.

I don't have any direct experience with this kind of setup, but from general knowledge and using a recreational unit I think your receiver may indicate better and worse as it gets more data and finds that it doesn't all agree perfectly.

Its quality indication can only work on signal strength and agreement of the measurements, as it has no way of knowing how close that solution is to truth.

Meanwhile, the average of that data is usually getting closer to truth even as its estimate of the error wanders up and down.

The deeper discussion along this topic is held in seminars, PhD thesises, and chapters of books, but the technology has been advanced to the point where essentially you follow the rules and procedures from the vendors to fit their best found results for sales support.

I'm lamenting my recent switch to Leica gear only because of the 17 years of yellow I've suffered and learned through, consequently also has helped to broaden my perspectives and let me understand what Ive learned in a similar but very differently laid out environment.?ÿ

The survey style being used for RTK dictates the default observation time & epoch, but you can change that on the fly in the middle of a survey by tapping Options at the bottom when you are in the Measure dialog.

The RTK engine will indeed continue to accumulate epochs if you let the counter go beyond the configured time. You'll see it in TBC when you bring in the vectors, the field method might be Topo but if you let it run for an additional 30 seconds it will be reflected in the Epochs count.

@jitterboogie I respectfully disagree.

As a professional, i set my procedures based on math and science.While some in sales can advise us well, it is our responsibility to know how and why we do things.

If we ever find ourselves in a civil or regulatory proceeding my advice is simple. Never answer with, "The salesman told me that was the way to do it" .

@thebionicman?ÿ

EASY there big boy. I'm on your side.

?ÿ I never said follow what the sales rep said, just that the Trimble interface and the settings were developed by science and math and then propagated en masse to the less deeply involved or educated personnel who just get a set of default settings and then a 700 page user guide that they will NEVER use or get the time to digest because of their roles.

There's probably 100 things in access that no one uses.

@jitterboogie Enjoy your time on the water. I've recovered from seeing the words Trimble, sales, and default in close proximity to each other.

As far as we've come the vendors continue to abuse basic math theory. I understand the desire to trade simple for correct (especially when your target market isn't always the most educated). It frustrates me to see so many users that never delve beyond the quick start guide. We should be well beyond that by now...

@thebionicman?ÿ

I certainly agree that default settings in Access are probably not good for any one person. I'm honestly not sure who they designed it for but after months of using it and doing research in your spare time, tweaking settings as you learn new things, it gets somewhat less frustrating to use on a daily basis.?ÿ

For example, Measure codes was a major life hack for me when I got that set up, even though I don't do a lot of topo.?ÿ

When measure codes first came out in Trimble Survey Controller pre access. I was just out of the USMC and a Trimble Support person and certified trainer on dini level and rtk. Anyway TN use to have shoot outs and competitions lice throwing a chain pacing. Setting up transit the fastest etc. at the TAPS conference. ?ÿMy sales rep told the fastest traverse and topo crew which was a I man party chief and rodman. They had topcon 3 b if I remember correctly and they all were a well oiled machine i mean they could topo and i man could keep two rods hopping. Any way he set up a challenge for me with S6 and survey controller with out my knowledge. I thought i was there to help answer technical questions. Nope it was a competition. Steak dinner at the fancy stake house. Lol. It was a road way in an non completed subdivision. So i had sidewalk through curb and gutter to sidewalks. I had to use there codes. I entered them in measure codes. They ran and then i ran. . We never knew who was faster because about my 3rd cross section the owner said stop and how do you like your steak. And my salesman made the sale. The field guys picked my brain and said tgat measure codes was awesome.?ÿ
