@nate-the-surveyor

12D <www.12d.com.au> is software for surveying, a bit like carlson.

It is very popular down under.

In New Zealand particularly because it integrates well with Land On-Line, our government survey land recording and title system.

It looks and feels a lot like TrimMap suffering creeping feature-itis. The user-interface is kinda klunky.

Our workflow is field->tbc->12d->autocad, but there are some firms that use it for everything.

Current version is 14, so Mick is looking for something pretty old...

Thank you. I'd like it if we could download line work from a gis, at least for temporary use. I can see this being abused too!!

Land On-line can do WAY more than that.

On the survey side, we can upload changes - recording a subdivision say.

We can also call up images of the old survey plans

And there is all the country's title information (NZ uses a Torrens Title system) and the tools to manipulate - searches, transfers etc

So the first part of any job for me is to pull the data for the old survey marks and the underlying property boundaries into 12D, Then spit out a csv and dxf to go on the controller

For engineering work we get data from LINZ data service, without need for Land online registration/subscription.?ÿ We use aerial images, parcel boundaries, geodetic control, Lidar surfaces.?ÿ?ÿ

The trick is to understand that most of the parcel boundary data is from survey input, but some not.?ÿ In true "GIS" fashion.?ÿ?ÿ

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that 12d originated in Australia as a third party data transfer and survey processing software to Leica total stations. It has since evolved to be able to do most things that say Civil 3D can do but in an entirely different manner, however for drawing production it is shipped with a previous version of AutoCAD.

@jimcox

Looks like your office was ex SDR map. Glad I don't have the AutoCAD step anymore.

@kotuku4

Actually most of the LINZ service boundaries are from old digitised plan database unless post 300000 plans in area or LINZ have captured data to improve (most urban areas have had some attention but still nothing as good as doing a proper boundary calculation from plans). I'd be reading the metadata on that layer before I was including it on a plan to send to a client.

@richard-imrie

Never seen 12d shipped with AutoCAD and think you may be referring to LISCAD?

?ÿ

12d is powerful like Leica once you know it whereas C3D more pretty like Trimble, both will do job just quite different approaches.

@richard-imrie

My understanding (and it seems to be the case from my experience) is that 12D was written to compliment TP Stakeout, which was the onboard software available for the TPS1000/1100/GPS500s in Oz/NZ back in the day.

The story I have been told from multiple people is that a German fella living in Oz (Mick Gunther) approached Leica and asked for permission to break into their Total Station and write an onboard program program. They said yes. He then proceeded to write a program (TP Stakeout) that did virtually everything- handled 3D strings and alignments, surface models, face scanning....the whole lot. Leica then stripped his program and added sections of TP Stakeout onto their 1100/1200 instruments as add-on program that required individual licenses.

Essentially, if you have TP Stakeout on an 1100 then the only reason why you would ever need to upgrade is if you want a better EDM, the ability to take photos via your instrument, or the ability to setout a point directly from a DXF in the field. Not much else. I had a TS15 (non-imaging) for a while and still have a couple of 1200s sitting on the shelf. Aside from touchscreens, none of them do anything that TP Stakeout wasn't doing in 1995-2005.

I might happen to have one. Are exds/12d not able to provide one? I presume you have the dongle and nodes files, and just need the installer?

@martin_au

Correct. I only need the installer. EXDS wasn't too interested in helping me.
