Never got to eat one of Joey's sammichs. If I ever get to Philly, it's definitely gonna be Geno's. No offense to Pat's, though.
I have tried them both and each has its merits.
Sad to see Joey go though as he was such a character.
I dated a girl from South Philly once who took me to both Pat's and Geno's.
Afterwards she said that now that I knew where the tourist ate, she's show me the real thing: John's Roast Pork

forget Pat's or Geno's.
Head for Jim's on South Street or Tony Luke's on Oregon.
I'll second Jim's recommendation on John's
I've never eaten there but I saw Joey on TV a few times. He certainly was a character and a hard worker. RIP

You'll do well no matter which one you choose, and there are two or three others worth the ride around town.
Bummer.
Joey had sent me to the back of the line on several occasions (taking to long or ordering wrong). That was just his style...keep the line moving.
For the record, I enjoyed Geno's more than Pat's, but always would stop by both.
