Darrell D. Shine, legendary Texas Land Surveyor and esteemed gentleman, passed away yesterday afternoon in Houston Texas. Darrell was an acknowledged expert in all aspects of Texas boundary surveying, working on many, many vacancy cases and coastal boundary suits over the last 30 years. Based out of Silsbee Texas, Darrell, together with colleague Nedra Foster, was a walking encylopedia with a wry sense of humor and an optomistic outlook on life. To borrow a phrase from a close friend of Darrells, he was a man from a mold long since broken. He will be greatly missed. Funeral arrangements are pending.

It had to happen some time. But it would have been nice for him to have a few more good years.

So sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. My prayers and sympathies go out to his family and Nedra and Becky. Like countless others, I have been blessed to have known him and been friends with him.

Sad to hear that. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

He was a wealth of information and a damn good banjo player. He will be missed.

As a young guy, it was a privilege to have met him and learned a little from him in his seminars. For the stature he attained in the State, he always seemed to be very genuine and humble.

It was nice to have had the chance to set in on a few of Mr. Shine's seminars. There was always something to be taken away from them.

So very sorry to hear this. 🙁

Don't like hearing when any of our guys are sick or pass on, for whatever the reason is. His friends, family, and loved ones have our deepest sympathies and condolences. :plumbbob:

He will be missed. I had the pleasure of tailing the chain for Darrell and Nedra in East Texas while Nedra was still an SIT.

I heard Darrell in D.C. talking about some water boundary thing
called gradient boundary. He told some of the most hillarious
war stories about surveying. The entire room had tears in their
eyes from laughing. I wonder if he ever wrote a joke book -- it
would be a number one seller among surveyors.

I remember a mock trial at one of my early TSPS Conventions. The litigants were in it to win it and near the end they started coming up with affadavits and all sorts of miracle evidence to support their point of view or impune the opposing side.

Was Darrell the source of the Petey the Pineknot story?

Page 69 Darrell's Guide to Mostly Texas Surveying seems to be similar to the Petey Story, but without the illustrated humor.
