Pretend you have a 20-something daughter. Would you encourage her to date someone you do not know who says he is a "land surveyor"? Assume he talks the talk correctly, suggesting he probably actually is employed and working as a survey technician.

Na, if he's a land survey tech, he's probably unemployed.

Nope-Don't see a bright future. Too much liability for too little profit. We are good people but not to bright about money.

Not at all a serious question for any surveyor

Please move to P/R, humor, other non-LS

Why not?

Of course, "encouraging" a 20 year old daughter to do anything may not be likely to produce the desired result......why not just let things play out?

I would not encourage my 20 something daughter to date anyone. That would only cause the opposite from what I wanted to happen, happen. And if I tried to use reverse psychology and encourage her to do the reverse of what I wanted her to do she would figure that out and re-reverse my psychology a figure out a third thing. Either way I'd be wrong and feel guilty as hell if it didn't work out, no matte rwhat I had suggested. Besides, what is this? Pakistan? You have nothing to say about these matters.

Butt out, Dad. She's 20 something now. Let the bird fly.

BTW, I have a 20 something daughter and I have no more control over her than I have over the weather.

If you really believe that a 20yr old female is actually going to base her decision on what you tell her, go for it dude.

But my answer is yes, if that is what the guy enjoys and can spend the rest of his life doing and being married to the girl, then she will be a lucky girl if she wants the same.

Holy,

I have a real live twenty something daughter and we have a close relationship. I found that letting her make her own date decisions, without encouragement or discouragement from me, is a part of the maturing process.

I suspect your “pretend twenty something” is intelligent enough to discern the “jerks” from the “keepers”.

Have a great week!:-)

Yeah, then I would hire him so I could keep tabs and teach what I think is important, maybe he could take over the ship one day when I decided to step off.

My 25 year old daughter and my 20 year old daughter would not date anyone without my permission, we have a great relationship, that said, I think all other things being good, a surveyor would be great. He could go to work with me.

I concur that most 20+ would not take advice well if they didn't ask for it. Sam's would be the rare exception in valuing parental advice. In most cases the best you can do is gently suggest your concerns (maybe by asking a leading question instead of telling them outright) and hope they take that into consideration.

Somewhere in conversation, you might clarify if this person is licensed, and note that you aren't allowed by most states to use the title without the license.

Take the prospective date on a job, tell 'im a few survey jokes, and find out if he is the same garbage you are! If he is, and you don't encourage the relationship, you are a hypocrite. If he is not what you are, then he is either BETTER or WORSE, and you have to decide on that!

🙂

(ya'all is makin me laugh!)

What you said is exactly straight on and true, and can not be read the same way again, as the first time read through...so I have devised a fairly workable answer, teach both daughters to survey. One went in the Marines, and the other is a paid ski patroller in Alaska, don't think my advice was heeded...but they stay away from surveyors. At the age of 20, just be there to listen, and just because he is related to surveying now doesn't mean it's to late to find a paying job. See if he is busy or about to be laid off like the rest of us, these days a license might get you put out to pasture...talk about age dicrimination!!!

My wife married a surveyor, and after 28 years she's still happy. When it comes to being happy, it's not all about the money.

Holy Cow , Given that to most people land surveyor, survey technician equals the same,
count your blessings that said daughter has at least found a guy in work. Tis we mortal surveyors know the difference.

What would you think if said daughter rocked home with a divorced 40 YO medico?

Because I would stick with the 20 YO is or could be option....
