Started smoking full time in Boot Camp Sept. 1959, 8 days ago I quit cold turkey. Beginning to feel better now, kind of upset the system to just stop after smoking for 52 years. Be easy to start again, don't plan doing so.

Way to go Jud!!!!

Just say, "I'm not going to smoke today".

I understand it will never go away (never smoked, although both parents did, like chimneys), but it will be easier.

I've tried to quit a few ties. It's one of the hardest things to do. Good luck I hope you succeed.

"Be easy to start again, don't plan doing so."

That's the attitude, so you'll do it, I know. four years for me now after 40+. You can't believe how good it is.

Walked into a convenience store the other day and saw that an average pack was about 5 dollars. Your body as well as your budget will thank you. Good job.

Good luck, Jud. It was really hard for me to quit, but now going on my 4th year smoke-free, after many years of smoking.

My problem is I've already given up smoking, drinking and wild, wild women. All that's left is food. I'm pretty sure I couldn't last 8 days without eating.

Congrats Jud!

I've been clean for almost five years now. I still get the urge at the old trigger times (when reducing a level run), but tell myself "I'm not that person any more". With each day, it will get easier to crush that little craving. At this point it leaves my head as soon as it arrives.

The physical benefits will follow shortly, so hang in there.

I quit, except for the occasional cigar.
I went with the hypnosis route which, to my surprise worked like a charm.
One trick they taught us was, when you feel that tightness in your chest when craving a hit,
take a deep breathe in through the nose
hold for a count of three and release through the mouth.
Repeat 3 times.
That ache for a hit goes right away!

Good stuff. I quit in May. I went through the 3 stages with the patch. Only problem was taking the patch off.

When my son Daniel who posts here occasionally was five years old (he's now 35) commented about what he was going to do when he started smoking as he observed me preparing to light a cigarette, that was all I needed to gain the incentive.

I've always attributed it to the man upstairs because when I tried to quit on will-power alone, I had failed. But in that instant, the desire to smoke left me and I haven't needed will-power to resist it because I now longer have the desire.

I relate this not as any credit to me because I don't think I did anything but cooperate. Smoke free for about thirty years now and haven't missed it or wanted to at all.

Today is my 1 year smoke free anniversary. Hoping that others who made the commitment are doing as well. Also, something about a free slurpee today?
