Entire City and County is on edge. The County website is down again - no remote research. If you go to the county courthouse you have to deal with protesters. Not to mention the Grand Jury is across the street from you. Most companies and schools have emergency plans in place. We are all set up to work from home. All instruments sleep at home with us and all laptops are taken home as well. It's not that an engineering/surveying office would be a high profile target for looting but the office is very close to downtown and Busch Stadium and lots of bars and our crews are working at various places in the City and County that could become cut off with road closures.

I just can't wait for it all to be over with...I am sure that surveying in remote Oklahoma or Kansas is pretty nice this time of year. Wouldn't mind spending the day at one of those court houses in Texas that Kent posts pictures of...plus it's a balmy 14 degrees right now with a zero degree wind chill.

I hate Mondays, too.;-)

Seriously, I hope everyone keeps their heads in the right place up in your neck of the woods.

It's 17 degrees in Norman, Ok. this morning with a wind chill, but it may thaw today. I don't know about surveying in Texas. There is some of the most beautiful countryside there. But apparently from what I've read here on the board RTK doesn't work so good south of the Red River. :pinch:

I would say that the weather may be the only thing that might be in your favor at this point. Most mobs really don't like cold weather. I would pray that the weather prevails until the real storm blows over.

They don't make mobs like they used to 😉

“Not to mention the Grand Jury is across the street from you.”

Sad part is it doesn’t matter what the Grand Jury decides, apparently riots are planned regardless of their decision. I, for one, am sick of this “racist” crap. 😐

I still have a lot of family there. Thankfully most are on the St. Charles side. I left a murder a day 15 years ago and don't miss much about it. Might have done better with the balmy part. It's 5 above outside right now...
May the Big Man watch over you and yours...

We have to deal with the County's digital records from present back thru 2005 going down at least 2days a month with no hard copies to rely upon.

BTW, they nothing of Courthouse and/or deed records is available online.

There will be new administration arriving next year as all top officials were replaced during this fall's election process, this should prove very interesting.

😉

I was thinking about you this morning. They were talking about the situation this morning on the news.

It is a very sad situation.

The general public doesn't have all of the details. If the guy is guilty, he should be put in jail. If he is not, then he should be left alone. He will never have any peace either way.

What I do not understand, is when they were rioting after the incident, the rioters were looting businesses and damaging the buildings. What does that do? those individuals had nothing to do with the situation.

The police department in Memphis is preparing for possible riots. I just do not understand that mentality.

o.O

Meanwhile...I was heartened to see a television advert while in London (UK) recently that featured a mixed race family. It was for "toddler milk". My impression was that there was more inclusivity in the ads there than in the US.

I don't know about that. I've seen probably a half-dozen or more mixed race couples in adverts here. A recent one I see now and then is for some dating website.

Keep in mind, a grand jury [in the US] does NOT hand down guilty or not verdicts. They simply hand down actual indictments and only then does the DA decide whether to proceed with formal charges.

And, since grand jury proceedings are sealed, the public will never know what went on inside the court room.

That being said, ask any criminal defense attorney or honest DA and they will all tell you "you can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich".
If I'm not mistaken the defense doesn't get an opportunity to present its side.
Wonder if they can cross-examine?

In Arkansas when someone accuses you of a crime, the law enforcement take their word for it and they arrest you and the DA indicts you before the evidence is gathered and reviewed by anyone. Then they set bail according to the crime, all before and without allowing you to say a word.

St. Louis today Grand Jury edit

When you get called to give testimony before a GJ, you are not allowed to have counsel in the room. It is just you, the GJ and the prosecutors.
The GJ members are allowed questions to the person giving testimony also.

If you are the target of the GJ, you are aware of that fact.
You have ther right to plead the 5th to any question from anyone.
It is not a courtroom.
prosecutors usually do not like to Cal the target to the GJ. They are presenting evidence from arresting officers, witnesses, video or audio evidence and maybe someone who could be an conspirator or accomplice to the target. sort of putting the screws on them so to speak. They usually go to the GJ wih all there ducks in a row.

It does not have to be a unanimous decision to send the person to trial.
Once the bill is signed by the GJ foreman to be sent to the judge, then there can be plea bargains between the accused and the DA.

I spent a long time on a GJ. Very long time. It was only once that I did not vote for a tril bill for a target. It was a conspiracy matter. I thought the gov't witnesses were pretty sleazy and limn though their teeth. It turns out that months later, I was right. One of prosecutors (U.S. attorney) really come down on me hard for questioning their witnesses as not credible. Pizzd them off big time.
